Brakes Touchy?

Is it just me being used to driving old technology ('04 F250 and a '91 Wrangler) or are the PP brake really touchy. It seems like I am using one toe to initially apply the brakes.

Pretty touchy to me too. I've driven BBK cars but this one seems overly front biased. Not certain of the pad material either. Practicing the "limo stop" has helped learn to modulate these things.

Pads are pretty aggressive on the pp gt car but they sure work great and produce lots of dust.

What everyone said, yep. The pads are geared towards the track ... I'll be getting something less aggressive and dusty when these wear out.

Pads that are legitimately acceptable for track duty tend to have much stronger initial bite than the pads most commonly fitted to cars intended for legal highway and slower street driving. Other than requiring better pedal modulation skill of the driver than lowest common denominator drivers (pulse >0) might have, there isn't anything wrong with this.

Lou - expect to be disappointed with the bite of anything less aggressive once you get fully used to these . . . which will gradually happen. Plan on re-learning to start your normal stopping sooner, too.


I've had track pads on my '08 for about 3 years. You couldn't pay me enough to go with something like mass-market ceramics, even if I didn't track it.

From my experience running Hawk Blues at Road Atlanta, CMP, Roebling, etc., racing SCCA ITA, race pads have NO bite at first and require much more pressure to get the car to even stop. That's why you see during lap out cars weaving side to side: they are warming up the tires and brakes. Once they get up to temp they feel more like street brakes, but they are never touchy. YMMV

I just need to get used to the brake system of newer cars. My wife's 2016 Explorer feels similar, but not quite as much as the Mustang.

My '66 Mustang with drums was quite the opposite. It took both feet to stop that thing. ;)

LOL. Yes they are touchy. Not meaning to piss off the drivers behind but hard to hit them lightly.

Yes, overboosted for the street, have to adjust your style to be smooth. The car on track with race pads is very well balanced and you need the booster assist when they get warmed up. Thanks Ford for equipping the car with a solid brake package and the Torsen for the PP.

Came from a pp gt to a base gt and the bite on the base gt is very similar to pp without the brake dust.

I have no experience with Hawk pads beyond HP+, but Carbotechs at up to XP12 work very, very well when cold. Better even than the cold bite of whatever was fitted as OE for my car and way better than HPS, even with ambient temperatures down into the teens F. Much better than anticipated, I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

You might be right Norm ... I'm certainly used to them now and since the car's not a daily driver I may stick with the pads after all ... being able to stop quickly if required is a safety net that's nice to have.

I only have a Base GT and have been driving a Jeep Wrangler with 35" tires and OEM size brakes for 15 years. Man, I've been driving my GT for like 7 months now and still haven't gotten completely used to how much they grab. Catches me off guard still sometimes. Every time I drive the jeep I'm much more worried than I used to be. Didn't see that coming.

Same here. My daily is a 2002 Corolla and the brakes are not that great all. I had no problems adjusting to the gt.

The brakes on the base gt is good as pp gt. the calipers on the base gt are actually bigger than the 6 piston pp.
