Hello

Currently my 2015 PP GT is at the dealer getting the rear end checked out. The problem is a grinding and clunking from a stop. I know there are rear CV issues on a lot of S550s, but right now they r believing it's the diff. You can hear the noise really bad when I turn left and began moving from a stop(when the diff is doing its job) not so much accelerating straight, and not 100% accelerating straight and reverse and forward. Turning right from a stop, no noise at all.

Here is a video below. What do u guys think? Car has 35k on it. No wknd track warrior. The axles are not RH LH specific? so I should be able to flip sides and see if the noise follows.

If it's at the desler they should be able to find the problem - no real need to swap axles and experiment.

They're not sure. They were going to remove the cover of the diff but he started talking about being scared to do it, cause new problems, break in fluid blah blah..

I told them to throw a new axle and diff at the warranty co and if they cover it go for it. If not I'll have to swap part by part starting with the axle myself. Currently work like a fool and have an apt. I could do it all at my parents on thanksgiving break.

the axles are not identical, you cannot swap sides. drive-train is covered 5/60? still under warranty?

Go to another Dealership with experienced Techs who are not “afraid” to fix a car.

The Tech should have checked:
Lug nut torque
Axle nuts
CV joints on axles
Excessive play in driveshaft
Rear diff pinion bearing load
Rear IRS cage and it’s mounting points

And if there wasn’t any outward visible signs of premature wear or damages on external and surrounding rear parts, then he should have proceeded to drain the rear diff to check for metal particles in the gear fluid. If he was unsure of results of diff fluid analysis, then open up the rear.

If the car is under warranty, you should be letting a Ford Service Center fix it - not spending time/money fixing it yourself.

I don’t know if you have seen the axle nut thread in the suspension forum that BMR started, but some folks had success with clicking/clunking noises from the rear by replacing the rear axle nuts and torquing to spec.

For the record I installed BMR Subframe alignment bushings and the noise is gone!
