I have a Ecoboost and driving in normal I get around 18-23 in city. But, when driving in sport I average above 25-28 mpg? How is this possible...

a change in driving behaviour is surely the only answer?

Hmm... I learned how to drive stick in this car in normal setting until I found out there was a sport mode. Been driving in sport since, but I'm averaging 22 mpg

I will try it in my GT and see what happens. Any reason to drive my car more.

With an auto mileage will surely suffer. In Sport mode the auto holds the lower gears longer and rev matched downshifts. I drive my GT in Sport constantly and average 14.7 mph all city.

Yeah, my biggest gripe about driving around in sport mode all the time was that the car can't decide what gear it wants to be in at 45ish

Bingo! here in the burbs the average speed seems to be right about 43 mph. Just enough to go 3-4-3-4-3-4-3-4 all the way to work.

Depending on the traffic pattern I could kinda see why you might get better gas mileage in sport mode... technically if the engine is engine braking the throttle is completely closed and it isn't using any fuel. So if you are in sport mode and you are engine braking more than cruising at or above idle you could technically be using less fuel.

In sport mode you should have reduced mpg because the engine is at higher rpm more of the time than in regular mode, only makes sense.

I think it's a matter of math.

Car takes engine power and converts it to movement.
Driving style being the same, sport mode gives you more power and uses the fuel more efficiently to get that power.
Result, engine doesn't need to work as hard or use as much gas to create the amount of power to get the same amount of movement.

Now whether that accounts for the extreme difference in MPG you have, I doubt it. But I definitely noticed a 1-3 MPG improvement when I started driving in sport mode instead of normal.

Lower mpg in Sport Mode.

My EB auto drops mpgs significantly if I put it sport mode. Usually at least 10% decrease more commonly 20%.

The engine doesn't make any more power in sport mode. It only makes the throttle more sensitive, and in the case of the automatic, changes the shift points.
