Since the buttons around the screens are almost always useless (Number pads?? When am I EVER going to use that?) I think it would be possible to just replace the screen and have a bigger screen sitting on top of the existing plat form. So my question is: how is the screen connected to infotainment system and if there is a screen using the same connection as that of base model screen?

A few people including myself wanted to swap in the premium center stack but it looks to be quite different from the base stack, there may be an aftermarket piece eventually like on the last gen cars but at this point who knows.

So you guys wanted to see more of the base model center stack? :D
Unfortunately it is all one board so aftermarket companies will need to have climate controls on top of the push button start. The nice surprise though is that the base model buttons are not attached to the board! There MIGHT be a way to get the toggle switches on the base model!

Cutting the board might not be the best option... There really isn't a nice partition of electronics like I was hoping there would be.. I think it would be possible though to fit an lcd screen in front of the board by removing the buttons and mounts. There is about .75" of space between the board and the face of the bezel.

Now onto dimensions for a 2 din unit... In order to have a 2 din unit in place of the screen you will need to relocate the sync module. There is only about 3.75" between the module and the panel. With the module relocated you will have 5". You will need a shallow 2 din unit.

I took plenty of pictures of the various connectors. Towards the bottom there are two pictures of the base model 4" screen.

Zack, you're insane - but we love you for it!

I don't know though, I kind of like the small screen w/keypad. I use it everyday and it doesn't leave the annoying smudges. But hey, to each their own. Good luck swapping it out.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work... Unfortunately this confirms my worst fear.

if that entire center stack is basically a whole unit then that really means that other than the toggle switches... we might never have an opportunity to install a aftermarket stereo. This means that manufacturers won't really invest the R&D into making something that is just for one type of car and model year and worst of all we will be forced into something else for infotainment.

I understand that I'm not REALLY missing anything HUGE with Sync2 but I still liked the interface. I think for me I might end up going with something that connects via bluetooth.

Not a problem!!

I don't think we will have a problem with nothing being developed. Aftermarket companies did it with the 11-14 generation which had the same one piece circuit board design. The issue is going to be the lack of options as only a few companies will dive into this and the time of their release. I am not expecting to see anything until at least 2016.

This is exactly what I was looking for but like Asonitez stated, this is the worst case scenario.

With the configuration as is it looks like it is going to take a while to come up with an aftermarket solution. I would imagine the CAN bus functions are completely different from the 11-14 models so they will all have to be remapped before an alternative can be created. If it weren't for the A/C controls this would be a fairly straight forward swap.
