I notice Barton sells both a shifter and a shifter with a trans mount.

Anyone running the latter? I'm disappointed in the factory shifter and I'm looking to upgrade.

Does the trans mount include a driveshaft loop? It looks like it.

Yes, this particular Barton set up also seconds as a DS loop. Haven't heard of anyone running it yet

$695 for shifter, trans mount and DS loop for the Barton, or

$485 for MGW shifter, no DS loop

I believe the trans mount shifter seconds as a DS loop so no need to purchase. The DS loop is for if you only have the standard Barton I believe

I haven't driven the Barton, but after installing my MGW and looking at their different designs I can only recommend the MGW. If you're seriously considering racing in a series that requires a DS loop then get the expensive Barton, but otherwise you don't need it and the MGW is the best you can get.

That the trans-mount Barton "includes a DS loop" is a matter of that being what you get when the shifter is completely separated from the body - a "DS-loop" kind of structure is then the only reasonable way to support the shifter.

The real advantage (that benefits everybody rather than only the drag racers facing a rule requirement) is that the shifter now moves entirely with the transmission, so you don't get any relative motion effects getting in the way of hitting your shifts (I think especially the 2-3 and 4-5 upshifts . . . and the 5-4 downshifts when you're out on a road course).

Right. I'm just saying that the MGW already mounts ONLY to the trans at a lower cost and better design. The Barton will have higher NVH because the lower mount goes to the subframe mount. At that point there is all of the "noise" and vibration from the transmission being dampened by the subframe but instead of being absorbed by the mount and bushing it will be transferred to the shifter as well.

In one of the MGW videos he actually lifts up the transmission by the shifter, proving it's strength and connection to the transmission. As I said in the MGW thread, NVH is negligible and lower than the trans bushing coupled with an upgraded shifter bushing.

If you want the insurance of the DS loop and a great shifter (but a bit noisy), get the Barton. If you want a quiet and rock-solid shifter capable of HPDE's and DD duty, get the MGW. I'll be taking my car to at least one HPDE this year, and I'm taking it to the Tail of the Dragon in two weeks so I can report back on it's behavior. I'm sure it will be stellar.

Here's a video from when they released the race-spec. [ame]

Does the trans mount include a driveshaft loop? It looks like it.

The trans mount option does include the drive shaft loop. Our shifter can be ran both ways, either to the body or to the trans. Both ways can still utilize the drive shaft loop. As far as noise and vibration goes, I can tell you from customers who have reported back to us after using different shifters available, that our shifter will have less vibration and noise when compared to ANY shifter on the market.

There has been this recent trend to mount to the trans and the idea that is the only way to go. I personally prefer the shifter being mounted to the body of the car. It dampens the vibrations coming from the trans and the effect on the shifting is minimal. Mounting to the trans helped a lot with the 11-14 cars because the gates are so close together. The 2015 has a lot more spacing between the gates and a lot more room for error. When we release our full replacement shifter for the 11-14 it will have the wider gate spacing like the 2015.

I tell everyone, try the shifter mounted to the body and then use the solid mount if you ever get locked out of gear. If the body mounted shifter works for your needs then you don't have to put up with the constant vibration/movement of your shift knob. We have replaced a lot of setups that utilize the trans mount with just our body mounted shifter because not everyone can tolerate the vibration that is present with all trans mounted shifters.
As far as pricing goes, Keep in mind we use dealers... The listed price will be about the same among all of our dealers, a simple phone call to some of them may yield a price reduction.
