Axle oil temps...

On the way home today took a canyon home (Topanga) and I noticed my axle temps got to about 190- 200 deg F. Is this normal? I just got 4.09 gears installed, I will ask what diffy fluid he used. He told me but I forgot. I was in 2nd and 3rd the whole way down 12 miles and it was hot today. It hit 87 in the Valley.

That's well within normal range. Start to be concerned above 250+

I think the warning light comes on at 270 or 280, so your temps are not an issue. That said, because I do track days, I went with Redline 75-85 and had the exhaust wrapped pretty extensively to keep things cooler. I don't know if 4.09 gears make a diff (PUN intended) and run hotter. I'd think extended time in 2nd and 3rd may have contributed to more heat. But if you were running hard for a long period and only hit 200, I'd feel pretty good.

The 4.09 gears do make the oil hotter as they are moving at a faster rate. I never really paid attention to what they were to begin with the OEM Torsen 3.73's. They got stuck at 218 and stuck there.
