Even if autonomous vehicles were to become 100.0000.....0% reliable and those benefits 100% true, none of them show up on the 'fun' side of the ledger.Assuming that they can be built with ironclad reliability in the autonomous driving systems, of course I'd be all for them. Insurance costs would be virtually nil, deaths and injuries from accidents would be almost completely eliminated, highway speeds would be higher, traffic tickets would be eliminated, and you could do NYC-D.C. runs while taking a nap like you're on Amtrak. You wouldn't have to worry about having one or ten extra drinks at the bar and having to drive home drunk.
And you could still get your driving kicks at your local race track.
Where's the downside?
For me at least, driving has always been a lot of fun. Still is. Not just the track time, but all the daily stuff in between (and it doesn't even matter a whole lot which of my cars I'm driving). The few minutes spent driving those 3 or 4 mile trips to the hardware store yesterday were enjoyable in and of themselves, despite the fact that the reason I had to make them wasn't. I would never want to give up the fun, any of it.
