Assuming that they can be built with ironclad reliability in the autonomous driving systems, of course I'd be all for them. Insurance costs would be virtually nil, deaths and injuries from accidents would be almost completely eliminated, highway speeds would be higher, traffic tickets would be eliminated, and you could do NYC-D.C. runs while taking a nap like you're on Amtrak. You wouldn't have to worry about having one or ten extra drinks at the bar and having to drive home drunk.

And you could still get your driving kicks at your local race track.

Where's the downside?
Even if autonomous vehicles were to become 100.0000.....0% reliable and those benefits 100% true, none of them show up on the 'fun' side of the ledger.

For me at least, driving has always been a lot of fun. Still is. Not just the track time, but all the daily stuff in between (and it doesn't even matter a whole lot which of my cars I'm driving). The few minutes spent driving those 3 or 4 mile trips to the hardware store yesterday were enjoyable in and of themselves, despite the fact that the reason I had to make them wasn't. I would never want to give up the fun, any of it.

In my opinion, the reason we have traffic jams and deaths on the highway is the result of poor vehicle flow concepts and highways and roads shared with overly heavy vehicles from semis to large Vans and SUVs. Freight should travel in single file in dedicated lanes and highways. Stop light sequences should advance after the traffic has passed.

I voted with my wallet. V8, ragtop, and manual.

You are hitting the rev limiter, effective redline.

Floor it and the red gauge light will light up at redline (assuming you have a premium). Then it'll upshift.

I guess if you put it in S and use the paddle shifters, it won't upshift, and you can just keep it floored and bounce it off the redline forever.

I like the auto, mine will be a daily driver and I like that in traffic I can just relax and when the road gets a bit twisty I can use the paddles and have a little fun. It's just not a priority plus my wife can't drive stick and I want her to drive it as well.

In the end it all comes down to how you'd prefer to drive your vehicle. Reading posts about "manhood" or "enthusiast" or even stop and go traffic are meaningless because everyone enjoys driving in different ways, and yet others have only one option. In the end, when you're driving down the road with a huge smile across your face - because you will; this car is awesome - there won't be anyone next to you questioning your manhood for letting the car do the work or teasing you for doing the work yourself by grabbing a "phallic symbol".

Probably not in this car. The auto is pretty good, but it's not a ZF8 or dual-clutch. A well-driven manual still might be a little quicker. Key phrase: "well-driven."

Considering all the personal priorities and preferences, the OP should pick the one that racks up the most checkmarks on his scorecard. They both work well.
