About 5 years ago I drove past a fat cop with a clipboard and pen standing on a traffic island at the intersection of Flinders and King St's here in Melbourne. I was literally cruising slowly in my fully stock 2001 Stang. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later I receive a notice to have the car's noise checked at one of a list of approved exhaust shops. If it wasn't done, and the results returned satisfying reg's within the allotted time my car was to be deemed unroadworthy.

"Shitty" doesn't quite cover how I felt when I received the note. I booked my car in for the required check, at a place near home here in Melbourne, and watched everything the guy did on the day like a hawk. The bloke seemed most sympathetic, noting that stock Maseratis, Ferraris and Lambo's are far far noisier than my Mustang was stock.

The dB meter was setup exactly as you've described but no police were required. The guy educated me on what does and doesn't fly re. regulations. He tested it at idle (no prob's) then at rev's (just over the legal limit) but he wrote the figures down right at the limit so I'd pass.

I left there wondering what the hell happened to fun and how the hell do those cars above get away with it straight from the factory if mine didn't?
Over the weekend I was cleaning all personal effects out of my '01 Stang to prepare it for sale and I stumbled upon the dB exhaust check form the tester filled out.

FWIW the readings he wrote down on the form for Vicroads and the authorities were:

At idle: 87dB
Revved at 3300: 90dB

That was a stock exhaust and, as I said above, the revs number was actually higher but he did me a favour and jotted down 90dB saying "meh, it was close enough!"

If the 2016 is 74dB at idle, comparing it to my daily driver Stang of the past 14 years, then changing the exhaust over is an absolute must for me now, if it wasn't already.

As others have said the Magnaflow's deeper burble is of definite interest. I haven't checked out the ARH one yet, that I can recall.

Have a look at 'Post #50' in this thread, the FRPP is pretty close to the same as the S-Type. The manufacturer (Borla) say that Ford Racing had a hand in the tuning of the sound/volume of the FRPP exhaust and the tips are different. Other than that, same system.

When I ordered mine, shipping was quoted a bit higher for the FRPP sport than the S-Type, beats me why, same dimensions/weight, but I just wanted the exhaust I liked so went with the FRPP.

I dont know the reasons for why its not stocked locally, that would be a question for the suppliers of Borla exhausts in Australia.

Dat sound though:

The Ford Racing sport uses different mufflers as compared to the Borla s type....a little bit quieter....both are made by Borla....Ford Racing is sold in Aus by Herrods I believe...I think that kpm were also selling Ford Racing stuff. Ford Racing is also a bit dearer.

Short answer = no

The ATAK is pretty well known to be one of the loudest exhaust options. Putting it way over the accepted DB levels in Australia.
Having said that, depending on many factors.....you might get away with it, for a while..

I have seen many Maserati with loud stock exhaust , but they all get away with it.

So like many here, ive been watching dozens of Youtube vids of Mustang exhausts for nearly 12 months. You get to the point were you just start getting more an more confused about what you like. :headbonk:

At this stage ive narrowed it down to 3.

Kooks Axle Back (My current preference)
Roush Axle Back
MBRT Cat Back

My preference is for a deeper sound with no rasp at the top end, according to American Muscle the Kooks does that perfectly. Decisions decisions.
