Tom and I are working on a weekday drive (or weekend). Interested?

Tom and I left from WalMart in Dahlonega (off Hwy 60 and a direct drive up to Suches, GA) the last time.

All cars welcome.

Let me know the date.
This week the kids are out for Fall Break, so I don't know if that means more folks will be in the mountains.
Traffic was light this afternoon in Marietta.

Here is the copy of the PM that I sent to Dave (dpAttanta)
I just talked with Steve C. He is the organizer of the North Atlanta area alternative car show every month called Worship. He just returned from Watkins Glen at the Watkins Glen GP (as a film maker and volunteer mechanic).

He goes to car shows every week. He can't commit at this time since we have no date yet. :)

He did offer to send me his map of some of the great back roads in these mountains. He knows these roads better than anyone that I know.

I am going with next Tuesday or Wednesday (10/1 or 10/2) with a weekend date of 10/5?

BTW, Here is a picture of one of the cars in his last event:

I never caught the name of this guy, but the dude had a great car:

Next Tuesday, or Wednesday (10/1 or 10/2), works for me, Mark, and most likely Neil and Jack.

I emailed Steve to see if he was good on Tuesday or Wednesday. If not, I asked for his map.

I can for Saturday as well.

This is the Figure 8 I always drive. It's composed of Highway 19, 348, 60, and Wolf Pen Gap road (180). You can see 75 just to the north east of this map. I typically enter the come up 400 to 19 in Dahlonega and then follow 19 into the figure 8 loops on the lower left / SW side of the map. Expect to have to stop at some point halfway through your first loop to air the tires down. Mine bite well at 35 psi hot.

IIRC that is the same route we did last time. Sometimes we through in 75 to the east as well depending on the time.

To be honest I've never heard of airing down your tires, except for 4WD in the mud. I used to change the pressure based on the temp profile across each tire in the pits, but I'm not doing that for street driving. I can't imagine the tires would ever get that hot. It's not like we're diving into 10a at Rd ATL at 120mph.

If you're taking a leisurely cruise they'll be fine. If you're pushing harded you can see the temps build and the pressure climb. I run mine at about 37 cold on the street to reduce tramlining, but up there they climbed up over 42 hot easily. Backed that down to 35 hot and the car was biting in significantly harder in the corners. There were absolutely corners in portions of these areas I'm approaching at 80-100mph easily in this car and all within my own lane. This car is a beast on the mountains. A few PSI can make a difference. Heck we used to monitor pressures between runs in autocross even, any of these gaps is far more turns and faster speeds than an autocross would ever get you up to.

The date is Wednesday 10/2. Meet at WalMart off Hwy 19/60 at 10:30 am.

The WalMart is a few miles to the 19/60 Hwy that goes to Woody Gap then right (suches, GA) on Hwy 180 with passes Lake Winfield Scott. That dead end's at Hwy 129.

I start at 33 #'s on the Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 FP tires. That seems to work well at speeds up to 20 Mph over (it's a super-speeder ticket after that).

I'm in... the weather is still looking good.
Dave,
I agree.

The guy on the pole position knows the roads. We will just follow him in the back while making a lot of noise. Engine:
