Hi after putting in my order at the weekend I just wanted to clarify with anyone that know how the new tax rules in April will effect deliveries next year. My dealership said that Ford will not pay the difference from this year to next from £1200 to £2000 and this will be the customers responsibility. Does this sound right??

Yes, Ford is not responsible for tax changes.

They seem to be making these claims, which is a bit shoddy; however on your documents it'll tell you whether they're paying it or you are, they have a price protect, so the car should stay standard price, just the tax they may ask u to fork out on, mine includes the amount needed for 1st year tax, which was something like £500, they'll provision that first year tax up to that amount, if they have £2000 written down, you're fine, if £1200, then you'll have to fork out. IIRC.

It will be yes, check your small print that will say that the tax is correct at the time and may change by the time the order arrives. The cars price in the order won't change, but you will have to pay the extra tax.

On the upside, cheap car tax for years afterwards!

You are right looks like I have 1175 included for First Reg fee and Road fund license so I guess the difference is my responsibility?

Yes you are responsible for any tax changes - the Ford UK price list clearly states this fact.

"Price Changes
This price list is effective from 1st April 2015, and supersedes all previous price lists. The prices in the publication were true and accurate at the time of printing. You should, however, check details with your Dealer as there may have been changes in view of Ford's policy of continuous development. The right is reserved to change prices at anytime. Change to government legislation or tax changes could result in a change to published prices."

And the "price protection plan" explicitly covers this:
"Ford's Price Protection Plan means that the price you pay is the same as the price on your order as long as you are prepared to accept delivery within three months, and in any event, as soon as your vehicle is available. Your Dealer has full details of the plan. Ford Motor Company Ltd is not liable for changes in price caused by Government changes in tax rates or changes in other applicable legislation."

This is going to cause so much confusion in the run up to next year - for everyone. The date letter changes on 1st March but the tax changes come in on 1st April, so you will have to be careful to check when you buy a car for years to come!

I can't imagine there will be many '17 plate Mustangs with the old (current) tax regs. If mine comes before April, it certainly won't be registered until April 1st!

I've had the conversation with my dealer already and although my car has just been built in the last few days and will probably arrive in December, he's going to hold off registering it until April 1st so it is under the new regime (this will be a long wait). As has been said, the tax due on registration - whatever that may be next year - goes straight to the government at the prevailing rate at the time so budget for almost an extra grand on the current information.

The way I looked at it, the wait meant the equivalent of free insurance for the life of the car. Will be hard though... I'll try and find the PDF Trustford sent me about the VED changes.

While I wouldn't argue that this will be cheaper in the long run the first couple of years benefit will be negated by the increase in the new reg increase of £900. Plus if you wait over 3 months before collecting an available vehicle are you not disqualifying yourself from Fords price guarantee and risking the inevitable further price increases? On top of that you have to trust your dealer to look after your car and not let some other customer drive into it, etc, for a fairly long time.
Its not for me, but if i was going to have to wait then Dec-Mar would be the best time.

If it's over three months, it won't be by much and if it comes to that I'll just pay for the car at 90 days and then watch the clock for the last couple of weeks.

I'm not the first to ask apparently, so storage arrangements are being made for all of us in the same boat - probably some windy disused airfield somewhere I imagine (or the dealer's front drive).

I don't think there's much danger of it being used by someone else, after all the whole point is that it is unregistered and without number plates, so it shouldn't be on the road anyway (dealer plates excepted).

I'm more concerned about my self control giving out.

Self control wouldn't be an issue for me...I have none :D
Didn't mean someone else driving it; meant driving into/hitting it. Frequenting this forum tends to mean we hear of every issue which in the grand scheme of things are really pretty rare.
It's a good enough idea really. cheaper tax will certainly make it more appealing on the resale market if you don't intend to be a lifer.
