I didn't add navigation to my Mustang although I feel I may regret this, I heard you can change these on US models just wondering if anyone successfully changed these for a UK model or know of a way to do this?
basically, if we can get a car without the sat nav, and try and put a nav card in, we can see if it works, thus saving people c750 quid for new orders. (as the nav card will cost you about 50).
If this doesn't work, i'm sure changing out all of the requirements to add the satnav in (ie taking the Sync 2 infotainment module out) and replacing the hardware to include satnav, that should work, i do remember watching a video about this a while ago (at work so cant find it - just youtube 'add satnav to s550 mustang')
A car without sat nav, will NOT magically have sat nav with the introduction of a SD card.
Manders, stop peddling this rubbished. If it was as easy as that, don't you think we would know about it?
FFS, give a little thought to it. You pay ÂŁ700 odd quid for the extra hardware that goes into the car at the factory. A retro fit factory sat nav will be horrendously difficult, you would be better trying an aftermarket option.
The reason i'm peddling is purely the reason that we put a SD card into my dads Smax and it loaded up the maps, it's a bit glitchy, but works.
If everyone ran round with negative hats on shouting 'Nah it wont work' we'd still be sat throwing spears at sabertooth tigers and wouldn't have invented fire.
Let me get a stick and a rock so you can sharpen it into a fishing pole
Joking aside, I know it probably wont work. There's always the slight chance that something might, so worth a try, especially if it's there (If i'm next to someone without a nav and they're like go on let us try, and it works, what's the harm to any of us?)
A bit more research strongly suggests that the following is the case.
Hardware for nav & non-nav cars is identical, however changing the software is nigh on impossible for this reason:
Head units/aipms are programmed at the FACTORY with the for system (known in the US as OASIS) to give the car nav or non-nav capabilities. Apparently, even though dealer service centres have OASIS, theirs doesn't have the level of capability to change enable nav. In addition to this, even if you were able to somehow hack the AIPM, the Sync 2 system requires a VIN in order to run and if you input a VIN from a vehicle that is non-nav Sync 2 somehow knows this, so would disable the nav feature.
Some outfits in the US do an exchange AIPM which must come with a cloned VIN. This seems to be a simpler solution than trying to do it all software on individual cars.
Then of course you need the SD card too.
Whichever way you look at it, it's both complicated and dodgy.
For all the times you'd need satnav I don't think it would be worth trying to retrofit it. I'd be more upset about losing the additional speakers and woofer for when I get bored of that V8 noise
