The biggest issue I'm seeing with a lot of the local stuff is these bloody 8.5" fronts.
I can't speak for all states, but in VIC you are NOT allowed to run a narrower rim.
strange! why would they do that?

Because we're draconian...
You can't give up half an inch in width but you can quite legally fit a tyre to your car that will almost double its braking distance (read: cheap shit)
Makes sense to me...

It's not obsessive, it has to be done. We can't rely on the Yanks too much cos they run spacers and pokey fitment without consequence. Tyres hanging outside the guards ain't cool over here.
and besides, hangin out the guards looks shite and also therefore, means the car is not low enough.

I'm aiming for this with mine....
They certainly look AWESOME when dumped on their guts. No doubt about that.
The shape just lends itself to dumping

Might be a little hard to go around corners in those :)
But I'd wager they're not static. Who'll be the first airbagged S550 in AU?

I'm looking at AirRide gear because, as I've been reading they actually handle extremely well. Don't know if I'm convinced though. Besides U.S.4.5K is up there!?

If you want to stay legal, you'll need to integrate a sensor that detects the handbrake, allowing the car to air-out. That's a good start. Other requirements exist also, but it can be done.
The biggest issue I see is that the air stuff works in reverse to what you really want eg. It's at its firmest when it's pressured up and soft as custard when it's lowered.
I'm not convinced of the performance aspect.
Someone else can go first...
