View attachment 326373 I’ve got a really high mileage 2018 with a Stage 2 Whipple and E85 making 820/690tq. I bought the car used and it’s ticked since day one. No metal in oil yet. I’m just wondering how many out there are boosting their car with the tick?

After seeing some engines that have the tick tore down at dealerships with no cylinder scoring, and also seeing that new engines are not fixing it. I said screw it. I bought the car used to build it. If it blows down the road I’ll just do a built short block.

24,000 abusive miles with 5w20 and the engine tick. Just switched to Shell 5w40 last week. I will say that the tick got quieter after the whipple was installed for some reason. I say drive the car! Even with warranty it can’t be fixed.

the tick got quieter because you can't hear it over the whine... lol

any downside to 5w40 with whipple cars? My car only gets driven april-october... never in colder temps. Should I be using heavier oil?

Actually it doesn’t whine at all. This gen of Whipple is quiet. I’m only running 3.75 pulley though. I would never hear the tick at WOT anyways. Only at idle. I can still hear it at idle, it’s just not as loud.

Whipple recommends using 5w40 with their kits. It still ticks even with the oil.

When you say Shell 5W40, do you mean Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40?

FWIW, the Whipple instructions actually say to run Motorcraft 5W50.

I’m using Shell Rotella T6 5w40. I was advised by my shop and others to use it. Yes you’re right, Whipple does recommend 5w50.

It’s the typical lower end tick/tap. The sound travels through the exhaust which makes it hard to pin point where it’s coming from. Had the whipple on it for 3,000 miles. It’s had 24,000 miles of abuse. Still no issues or metal in oil.

I’m using platinum euro 5w40, but the t6 has more zddp and higher hths so I’ve been contemplating switching to it.

Yeah. What choice does one have really? Even with warranty Ford cannot fix it. I know people on their 3rd engine with the tick. I also know some with no cylinder scoring with the same tick. So the choices are to leave it at dealership for months without the issue being fixed or to drive and enjoy it.

Yeah. I was using standard 5w20 up until a week ago. 24,000 miles with the tick and only 5w20. I figured I would of seen some sort of issues by now. I made a ton of passes stock and drove it hard. I’ve had the Whipple for over 3k miles. I honestly haven’t noticed a difference with the T6, but it’s been cold so the oil is thicker regardless. It doesn’t sound any quieter right now. The tick has not gotten louder, but did get quieter with the whipple. Doesn’t make sense I know lol.

I have an 18 GT with a Procharger on it since 1,500 miles. About 5,500 miles on it now and has ticked since the car had 500 miles. I took it to two different dealers and documented. Both denied warranty. I made the decision to move ahead with my plans after I discovered Ford was blatantly ignoring the issue. Not smart, but buying a new $50k car with the intent to modify it wasn't smart in the first place, I suppose. Im currently running Mobil 1 5-30 with a pint of Schaeffers Moly EP Booster and the tick seems a bit better.....sometimes. It's such an odd noise that isn't rhythmic in nature, so who knows. Just pisses me off I have to listen to the thing clanking away when the exhaust is in quiet mode.
