I have broken a few half shafts and wondering how worried I need to be about the mt82? I only launch about 2500rpm I have 1400hp axles now but every time I launch im thinking what's next and keep thinking about the transmission but haven't heard of anyone breaking it yet on the 15s.

I heard someone mention they are stronger in the 15 but dunno how true that is.

I didn't exactly break mine, but started having 'issues' after a lot of passes at the strip. First was a very prominent whine from the gears. This was after 20k+ miles. Then that turned into a nasty 'thunk' from inside the bell housing when engaging gears; it was most prominent when going from a stop to first gear or reverse. This was different from the normal driveline slop noise.

I pulled the transmission, crated it up and sent it to Ben Calimer to get worked over. The 4th gear synchro was bad (which oddly I never had an issue with) and there was visibly noticeable notches is several of the gears. I didn't opt to replace the gears at that point...

He did his normal work (welded shift fork, replace plastic shift pads with bronze, and other 'tricks' he doesn't disclose), replaced the syncho, and shipped it back. I've had no issues since, but I haven't done much drag racing with it since, and won't be using radials again if I do; I'll go to slicks.

So what did you think of his work? Feel any difference? Cost? (if you are willing to share). And how do you ship a transmission?

It feels good. I can't give a definitive answer since I changed the clutch (McLeod RX-T) and installed a MGW shifter at the same time since it was all already apart. I did have the opportunity recently to try another '15 (just parked, not driving) with stock trans and MGW and I think mine feels more 'precise' when running through the gears. Not having driven both, I really can't say though.

Cost, including the new synchro and shipping both ways was $1100. The R&R cost from the dealer was close to that before they did the first bit of work, so it was well worth it to me.

Shipping was interesting. Ben sent plans/images of the crate to build; down to board size (2x3 for some instead of 2x4) to keep weight under the 150lbs max for FedEx ground. It was shipped out the evening of the 10th, and I drove it home the evening of the 22nd, including FedEx sitting on it for two business days.

Nice crate! I didn't expect that. Cost is pretty reasonable too. I am wondering if I could drive to him when the time comes. I don't think he's that far from me. Maybe 3 hours. Wish he would come on the forums.

Thanks!
