Anybody explain this?

I really want to upsize my tires from 265 to 295. I understand keeping the diameter of the tire maintains speed. Can anybody explain to me why changing the width but leaving everything else the same effects my speed so much? I have even tried 295/35/20, 295/30/20, 295/35/19 and 295/40/19. Anybody have any ideas? Or am I just overthinking this entirely too much?

The two-digit number after the slash mark in a tire size is the aspect ratio. For example, in a size P265/35 R19 tire, the 35 means that the height is equal to 35% of the tire's width, so changing the width, automatically changes the aspect ratio of the sidewall, and therefore the height and your speed.

This guy knows whats up. 35% of 295 is more than 35% of 265 and therefore taller. If you want a wider 19" tire that is almost the same height you're looking at a 305/35/19.

So what would I need to do to get a 295 tire? I’m okay with sticking with a 20 and I’m okay with going down to a 19. 305‘s are just entirely too wide. My current set up is 265/35/20

295/30R20 is as close as you're going to get to stock diameter.

A 295/30/20 is less than half an inch narrower than a 305/35/19 just so you know. I think you're having a kneejerk reaction to the number and not the actual size of the tire. They're both right around 12" of actual rubber width. Then of course you have tires that run wider or narrower in the same sizing.

What are you trying to accomplish with this? Looks? Traction?

You're getting your boxers in a bunch over the 295/30/19 being 0.2" shorter than the 265? As the calculator you attached indicates in slide number 2 -- 295/30 vs 265/35 -- you will be doing 89 MPH when your speedo reads 90. You're golden there. Get the 295's and be done with it.

I just really like the way 295s look. I’m looking for a nice square set up. Either 19/20x10.5 or x11

Agree 295/30/20 in pic 2 is fine.

Who cares about matching over all stock height unless you plan on dropping it low.

Run the 295/35 and SEND IT..
I think 30s are to narrow of a profile IMO.
35s look perfect.

Like stated. Changing the width of the tire will change the overall tire height. It is essentially more tire.
