Android - Wayz & Sync 3

Ok I'll try to explain my issue.

When I connect to Android Auto my mapping (Wayz and Google Maps) displays fine.

The issue occurs when I transfer back to the Sync 3 home screen. On that screen neither map show up, there is just a blank screen in the area that the Nav would normally be.

The reason I like to do this is because I like the options that the Sync 3 home screen gives me to see Nav, music and phone on the one screen.

Should sync3 be able to show wayz/google maps or is this just not a function?

Unfortunately Android Auto (Waze and Google Maps) does not interface well with Sync 3 at all.

The two platforms are kept completely separate and info is not shared between the two at all. You have to chose between one or the other.

The most annoying part is when you want to change the audio or climate control you have to first EXIT Android Auto, change what you want, and then go back into android auto, and back to where you were. Would be much easier if they were intergrated together more.

Eh, why would you want to run the factory nav when you can use Google Maps or Waze? Comparatively speaking, built-in nav will ALWAYS be inferior to what an internet-connected, instantly updated, traffic aware mobile application will give you.

Android Auto also integrates with just about every common audio app on Android, gives you voice control over all these systems plus calling and SMS, and puts everything you need while driving on the nice, large display your car already has. Additionally, the Android Auto control over audio apps is so much better than the way Sync does it in my opinion.

Plus, app developers need to actually build their apps for compatibility with Ford Sync 3. Now that all these Ford head units run Android Auto to begin with, you're not gonna see any developers bothering because they can just build for Android Auto, support EVERYONE at once, and not have to deal with one-off Ford compatibility.

It's a minor inconvenience to switch back to Sync when I need to dick around with the climate control or something, but I usually have that set to auto and control it with the silver temperature up/down wheel on the center console.

If I had to guess, I'd say I need to actually access something from the Sync side of things MAYBE once a month. Not an exaggeration, I literally almost never need to exit Android Auto.

After running Android Auto and Waze for a while, I decided to go back to running Waze in parallel with Sync 3 (I removed Android Auto from my phone and disabled it in Sync 3).

Reason being Sync 3 has much more functionaility than Android Auto. I get the best of both worlds, I have Waze running on my phone which is mounted to the dash, bluetooth connect to Sync 3 with all phone connect options (text message display), plus all the functionality that Sync 3 offers.

Until Android Auto is better integrated with Sync 3, I'm not going to bother with it.

You can get even better of both worlds

I use Android Auto, but still run Waze separately on my phone. This way I can have Sync up on the screen, but still keep Android Auto on so that Waze's alerts are played over my speakers, and still be able to go into Android Auto to use the voice functions, etc. You can even run Waze on the phone and Google Maps on the car lol, which I have done before since Waze is my main navigation app but is so horrible at searching for things along your route.

By default when Android Auto is open, the phone goes to that black "Android Auto" Logo. Just hit the recent apps button, then the home button, and you're back to being able to use your phone (or recent apps right to Waze)

I was happy they added Waze but I found myself using Gmaps anyways. Android Auto is far superior in my mind to Sync3(through no fault of Sync) it's just 10X more convenient with Google assistant always listening and google cards, ect. I find I only return to sync to make Hvac adjustments when things get hard to control from the physical controls. being able to seamlessly switch between google play music and my audio book app. I will never run another car again without a smart phone run interface ever again, my wife just special ordered a Mercedes from the factory to ensure it had the interface as well.

Okay, I went back an tried what you said, but I can't get the alerts to play through the sounds system. Here is the configuration:

Phone connected through Bluetooth to Sync 3
USB cable plugged into my phone
Sync 3 Android Enable Off (because I don't want Android Auto to take over the 8"display)
Android Auto Open
Waze running
Waze Alerts On

Question: Should my phone speakers be on or off? Anything else I need to know about?

FYI, my phone is a Motorola Droid Maxx 2.

Any configuration help you can provide is sincerely appreciated.

Enable Android Auto on Sync 3.

When you first plug in the phone it will auto switch to Android Auto, just go back to Sync 3 and continue using it as normal. (Button in bottom right corner to go back to Sync). Android Auto will be running in the background and still will be used for voice control, but otherwise Sync will work normally and audio alerts will go through the speakers.

Okay, so that worked partially for me. If I'm making a phone call, the Waze alerts come through the stereo system, but if I am not making a call, the alerts come through the phone speaker.

It's probably a phone thing, but I am open to any further configuration suggestions you may have.

BTW, I just use FM and Sirius so I don't stream any music, which may be related.
