Too many hardware changes. There is a reason why 2017 is Sync3 version 2.0 and 2016 is Sync3 version 1.0
Info on the hardware changes? Other than the USB port, which is plug and play.

Which is extremely interesting if true - all "I am waiting for '16 because it has Sync 3 that we will be easily upgrading over wifi for next 50 years" crowd is sort of really screwed here...

That's just a software version, and not any indicator there's some radical hardware differences.

Ford _just_ put Sync 3 into production last year, it doesn't make sense from a business perspective, let alone engineering justification. The initial Sync 3 hardware is very stout, there's at the very most some interface component that might need swapping out (and of course the flash to the newest software).

Just my $0.02 as a software dev/architect, hardware integration engineer (computer vision), etc ... :)

To some extent it has to be true since '16 requires "hardware upgrade" for Apple Carplay.

I just don't think there's "too many changes", I think it's a very minor difference, and I don't believe '16 Sync 3 systems won't upgrade to 2.0, I think that's just the current version with the correct [minor] hardware updates.

Too many changes would sort of imply core hardware differences, like CPU, RAM, display resolution differences.

My guess is there's a small, external bus interface, it'll be < $100 to buy, an hour or so to install, it'll report some component version that will allow the new software to be installed, and all "carplay compliant" Sync 3 systems will be versioned to 2.x

I think that component change is what's holding up the 2.0 even for Android play (that doesn't need it), they don't have separate branches for each, it's a single update to 2.0 that brings compatibility for both, so both have to be covered (and one does actually require the new hardware, i.e., Apple).

... and I'm wrong, I will cry and cry ...

Ford should be able to nail down a better time frame than "by the end of the year" by now...

From my understanding the only "upgrade" is the USB hub. The hardware powering Sync 3 (CPU, RAM, etc.) are the same.
