I think any fabric on the steering wheel after a while is gonna be disgusting.
Probably depends on the driver.

We put a Boss 302 wheel in our 2011 S197 the day they were available so had it for ~3 years when we sold the car a few months ago. It still looked new although the nap was getting thinner.

We don't eat in our cars. So we rarely cleaned it and then just "because".

I can't say how they hold up if someone drives with food or grease, etc on their hands. But Alcantara is not suede. It's a man made material that looks and feels like suede and engineered for these applications and is easy to clean as needed.

Disclosure. I do have a new (still in factory plastic wrap) GT350 wheel for sale (local only).

^^^That!

And the original intent of suede/alcantara wheels was to be paired with a pair of racing gloves of the same material for less slippage. Get yourself a pair of driving gloves...wheel stays clean and grips well.
