So I finally got around to remove the little air filter inside the air intake tube. When we were doing this we removed the sleeve inside the intake also. Is there any need for this sleeve? What does it do? Did anyone remove it? I’ll attach pictures to show what I mean. It’s the sleeve on the right of the pictures.
I didn’t see any thread covering this. Thanks.

The sleeve should stay in place, to keep the fuel trims at a good point.

If the sleeve is removed, fuel trims reach their outter limit. Little to no variance or adjustment by the car is left.

Keeping the sleeve has no impact on HP. Remove the filter only and you're GTG.

Yeah, you should reinstall the sleeve without the filter.
I had them both out at first, and I had some backfiring. I put the sleeve back in and it's perfect (at least until I have to have a smog check.)

There is a long thread somewhere here showing all of this. Near the end, is a supplemental post talking about replacing the sleeve.
