Hey everyone!
First time poster/user here and am also torn between either a base gt or gt premium.
I've been searching the forum for anyone that has done or will do an aftermarket sound system and have seen one or two without much detail included.

To cut to the chase, has anyone considered or is currently upgrading their sound system? If so, can you go in detail with the process and system/parts you are using? Also, is this challenging to do with the MyColor and other electronics on the gt premium? Would it be easier on a base Gt without the MFT?

Thanks everyone! This is a great site!

I'd be very leery of doing this. It isn't like swapping out head units in the '90's where you could just unscrew one and screw in another. You have to take the entire dash apart to change things, and that's how you get rattles.

That was a main concern of mine of mine as well. I haven't installed a sound system on such a new car previously and need to see it done by someone with experience before thinking about doing it myself.

Changing out the head unit with MFT would seem to be difficult to impossible without modifications. Looking up other vehicles with MFT on Crutchfield yields no results for aftermarket head units. Might be different on the Mustang since it does have some hard AC controls but no one has done it yet. Speaker wise though you would just have to match the speaker sizes.

Update: I should have Googled further. This company seems to have a solution which retains Sync features etc and allows use of an aftermarket head unit

Thanks for the reply! I couldn't see a way around the MFT system being upgraded so I was hoping the Base Gt would prove easier to work with but that seems to have a difficult dash to work with as well.

Looks like the link I posted is only for the base stereo. Probably still need to customize a dash kit but a good installer could likely do it.

Changing out the mft isn't really an option. You can add a LOC to the system and then run that to an amp and upgrade all of the speakers and sub(s). It's not an easy or cheap undertaking. Unless you are sure of what you are doing or willing to drop a bunch of cash, I'd go with the premium and budget for a sub upgrade and that will meet 95% of anyone's needs.

I've decided to go with adding a sub to the premium.
I've found many premiums to be well priced online (~36k)
My main concern now is fitting the sub nicely in the trunk and maximizing space

Zenclosures.com should have some custom options shortly and they are in Bradenton, FL. Another local one is DCar Customs - he gave me a good quote for a custom ported box from Birch to keep it as light as possible

Stoli I sent a message earlier and I'm still curious as to the difficulty of replacing the speakers. I saw on one of your threads how you had the door panel off. How is that going? Especially with all the electricals running through?

The door panels come off pretty easy - two bolts and then they pop off. There are 5 or 6 wiring harness plugs and then the cable for the door handle. As with almost all factory setups you need new plates for aftermarket speakers. Unless you want to do bunch of cutting and soldering for the wiring, I'd wait a few months until Crutchfield or someone offers plug and play harnesses (they could be the same plugs as previous models, I don't have a way to check).

Ah okay! Thanks for the insight!
Hope to see you posting more about it in the future as I haven't been able to find but a few S550 owners that are talking about aftermarket speakers.
