Active Exhaust as a cutout?

Looking at the prices of these active exhaust systems, I am curious, has anybody ever reconfigured their exhaust and put the active exhaust valve on a turndown before a muffler and then put a non-active exhaust muffler on their car, essentially using the active exhaust valve as an electronic cutout that are all the rage on old muscle cars?

I love my active exhaust, but it is not noticeably louder when opened vs closed to me.

Maybe it's a dumb idea, but I just can't justify spending $1k plus for a good sounding active exhaust when I have a lift, was a certified welder in a previous life, and sometimes have ambition to do things like this.

Any thoughts? Maybe these cars will sound terrible with basically open exhaust? Just an idea that popped in my head when looking at mufflers.

I'm surprised nobody has done this. Is there a reason?

I prefer the way Dodge did their active system. Both the resonators and mufflers are pass-through. The active exhaust is just a restrictor plate attached to an actuator. This allows for relatively inexpensive "cut and clamp" style exhaust mods to go in without messing with the system at all.

That would be a cheaper for upgrading your exhaust, but how much power is lost with it closed? That is choked down quite a bit.

I think it could work to put a Y in right before the muffler and have it open into a turndown when the active exhaust is put in track mode, but would go straight into a muffler when not. I would bet the sound level increase would be quite noticeable for sure. Just not sure how it would sound.

In any mode, opening the throttle opens the valve. The rate just gets more aggressive as you go from Street to Sport to Track. At WOT, it's open fully no matter what. No power loss as a result.

As for your idea, I'd do a test run with the mufflers completely off. If you like sound, go for it. It would probably make sense to have the valve not fully open until at WOT though.
Yeah, I knew it was full open at WOT, but. I may give it a try at some point, I was just curious if anybody had thought of it, or if anybody had tried it.

I don't have it as a cut out but I did wire my active exhaust up to a polarized switch and control it myself.

Good idea but I think every start would be insane unless you had it in quiet start mode 24/7... Do you still have the resonator on the car? or have you done a res delete with a X/H pipe? I was very happy with my active and steeda X pipe. But once I added longtubes and no cats the X had to come off (less than a week). Now have a magnaflow tru x resonator on it. Was a lil quiet at first then broke in, then with the whipple added, its like a hybrid in quiet and loud in track mode. Full throttle is crazy loud.

Loud starts are the best part. I have a Steeda H-Pipe resonator delete that I have not yet installed, other than that, it is all stock.

Well get that sucker on. You will love it!!! And mine is still stupid loud on a cold start. Just be sure the wiring harness for the active exhaust aren’t too close to the body edge as they sometimes get pushed back when doing a res delete. The Steeda clamps sucks. I used these to keep the exhaust from moving.
