Hey all, I'm currently looking into replacing headers/exhaust, but need a bit of help. I'm looking for some obnoxiously loud exhaust (I bought this car to have fun.. and I'm going to have fun), but I currently live in an apartment. I would rather not piss off all my neighbors, so I was thinking of just doing an electronic cutout, that way I can open it up once I leave residential areas. My thought was to do this to the stock exhaust, but the stock exhaust is rather heavy, and if I can reduce some of that weight, I'd like to do so.

I was thinking of getting possibly Texas Speed & Performance long tube headers with an MBRP Race, cat delete, then using an electric valve to reduce flow (and hopefully sound) when leaving the apartments. Is this feasible? Something like this (random part picked out for demonstration, not what I'd actually get.. possibly): https://www.summitracing.com/parts/qtp-qtec30

Second, I intend to get a tune after this, but I'm a little unsure what my best route is. From what I understand, I should get an HP ngage, since the Lund one is locked.. will I be OK with a canned tune to start with (I just want it to run reliably at the moment)? I intent to do a bit more to my car, very possibly a supercharger if I get a raise, but would rather not have a proper tune done multiple times.. that would get quite expensive.

Thanks.

Headers and the race exhaust is going to be extremely loud. I would suggest street and do cut outs. I have cut outs I'm waiting to put on mine, but there wasn't much room to install them as they came. So I'm modifying them and getting them welded in.

You're going to need a tune when you install headers, especially if you're going catless. You can use an X4 which isn't locked to one company, but data logging is more difficult. I'm in the process of switching my tunes over to a lund nGuage. I went from steeda to lund and I'm very happy.

I was also hoping to open my exhaust a bit with a cutout and somehow leave my MBRP Street and cats to keep the car legal, but as Kyle said there really isnt much room. I would be curious to see if anyone has had luck with it.

As for tune you will need something for the headers no matter what, but it sounds like you will need an eventual custom tune, for the headers/supercharger so id say it makes sense to start off with a custom tuner over canned from the beginning. The tuner will more than likely tell you the tool they prefer, and that way the tuner is familiar with your car before the power adder. My vote is for DiabloMatt from the forum, but like many other tuners this time of year is pretty busy.

Extremely loud is what I want.. I'm just trying to find a way to quiet it when in residential areas. When I park at my apartment, the back of the car is about 10 feet from the window of a neighbors bedroom.

I know I've seen videos of people with cutouts, so people mange to make them fit, though they're usually located near the cats.

Do tuners usually charge the same for second/third tunes? I've heard roughly $500 for a tune.. I'd rather pay that $500 once, not two-three times if possible. Its also likely that I'll be doing the parts swap/tune 1500 miles from home.. my sister works at a garage so I'd have tools/assistance to do it while on vacation.

That's the point. With headers, no cats, resonator delete, and hell - even the streets, your car is going to be crazy loud without even opening the cutouts.

I had this problem (living in an apartment and leaving at 0430 daily) and ended up installing a Magnaflow GT350 catback - wired up the active exhaust and now I have loud and quiet mode.

That's why you'll need more quite exhaust normally and then when you want it loud, open up the cut outs.

I was thinking that. The weight savings probably wouldn't be enough for me to worry about. Would the mufflers be enough to keep it fairly close to stock level volume if I were to cut out the rest and throw in an h-pipe or something? What are my best options for placement of cutouts?

Sorry, lots of questions, but I've never been willing to do exhaust before, having had mediocre cars and been living in apartments for 90% of my driving life.

I went with a full xforce long tube headers its a full 3" exhaust and it comes with 2 remote control key fobs to open or close the valve .

with it open it sounds like a bloody NASCAR, closed it sounds stock.
I run a Whipple stage 2 with out changing the mapping for the valve open or closed.

I looked at that system, but wasn't very happy with the sound. I'm trying to get away from the more raspy sound and get a nice deep rumble more like a muscle car. From what I've heard (though camera audio is always bad), the MBRP Race and the Magnaflow Competition come closest.

AWE Switchpath comes to mind. I don't live in an apartment complex, I have a town home instead and the parking layout is very close to that of an apartment complex. I always start my car in the quiet mode, and even though it is still loud I haven't had any complaints.

For that money, I'd rather have an exhaust that actually opens up and flows better.

Electric or vacuum or boost cutouts ftw.
I laughed so hard Effn round in traffic someone called us in and only guy pulled over wasnt doing jack butt had loud exhaust w no cutouts. Lol, all the offenders just flipped closed and drove panzi arse out of there. Poor young kid. We ate n came back from top notch and cops still had him roadside for an hour thirty for a warning...
If you really like driving fast where avoiding attention is key, stealth mode cutouts ftw

Thanks for all the replies.. I finally just said 'screw it, I don't like my neighbors anyways'. If people complain about the noise, I'll throw pool noodles in the exhaust during startup, or eliminate cold starts (is this safe? I can idle longer if needed...). I ended up getting a set of the MagnaFlow Competition that was cheap on eBay. One thing I want to do though is cut off the x-pipe and replace with an h-pipe, but I'm having difficulty finding a 3" h-pipe... they all seem to be 2.5" for the factory exhaust. Anybody know where I can find a 3" set?

H Pipes are very simple. A good exhaust shop should be able to build you a 3" H Pipe in house.
