Active Braking - Staying on after turning off

Tell me I'm not going mad..... I've had my current 2019 GT for 5 years and had a 2017 for 2 years before that, so know the car pretty well.

I always have the active braking turned off - it's always the first thing I do after picking it up from a service or MOT as the dealer always turns it back on. So it scared the shit out of me yesterday when it braked and locked up when I wasn't expecting it. It hadn't been in for any work so it wasn't a case of forgetting to turn it off. Since then it won't stay off - I used to turn if off and it would stay off until it was turned back on - now it's on every time I get back in it.

Anyone else noticed this? Could it be a software update? I've got automatic updates on but assumed it had to be running and connected to wifi to do any updates.

Is the only way to permanently disable it to disconnect the radar on the front?

BTW it seems very quiet around here, where's everyone gone??

I’m on a 2020 (fully updated, just had the recall done etc) and it’s not turned itself back on - I have it set so the dash warns me, but it’s never hits the brakes for me.

It’s a long shot / guess, but I wonder if battery voltage drops, it treats it the same as a battery disconnect and resets some stuff - how’s your battery ? Any other signs that it might be failing ?

You cannot permanently disable Pre-collision assist. You can reduce the sensitivity and display settings but the brake assist always comes back on when you restart. This is the extract from the manual. My 2019 car has always behaved this way.

There are two parts to it, active city stop will apply the brakes to stop the vehicle at lower speeds, and brake support will prime the brakes and apply brake assist at higher speeds.

It will not activate if you are already braking

OTA updates only apply to Sync3 on S550 cars

2017 cars didn't have EBA

That's interesting - I must have just been lucky in that it has never intervened (even though the red box on the dash and the alarm go off fairly regularly - approaching clear slip roads etc)

No, the active braking has definitely stayed off when I've set it to off - I understand that you can't turn off the warning, and that there are different levels, but you can disable the active braking and it has stayed off until turned back on. I'm wondering if it's a software update.

Not according to Ford it doesn't (or my car)


'You can switch active braking off using the information display controls. See General Information.
Note: Active braking turns on every time you switch your vehicle on.'

The only way there could be a software change is if the Ford dealer has done it.

The warning is the first stage. If you ignore it when a collision is imminent it will brake, but not necessarily enough to avoid a collision. Active city stop works at lower speeds and will completely stop the car (I have had that happen at toll booths when the barrier hasn't lifted correctly)

The most common trigger is a parked car when you leave pulling out a bit late.

It goes off regularly at a crossroads I pass most days where I only lift off when a car in front is turning left, and I assumed it only alerted as I had turned off active braking but perhaps it's due to speed or sensitivity level. The first time it did it was when I was pulling into a parking space after just picking it up from the dealers so assumed it was because they'd turned it back on.

I'll keep an eye on it and if I end up with whiplash I know it's not that!

No problem. The warning happens well before the active braking. I can only think of two occasions in 30k miles where mine has actively braked, both for toll booth barriers that didn't rise quick enough (using a toll tag so didn't need to stop)

It’s (another) guess, but if you don’t want to dive into the menus every time, flicking to track mode might disable that feature ?

Just be careful with the dialled back traction settings though …

Yes thanks. The tractions settings are pretty useless in normal made so probably won't make much difference!

If thats useless because they don’t catch your arse as quick as you would like - defo don’t try track mode …

If that’s useless as they are a pain and get in the way of you driving style than yes, go try track mode

When I bought my first Mustang I took it to Millbrook to see what the limits were. Never managed to catch it once on the skidpan, the pendulum effect is just too much. I've only spun it once on the road going up a 1:10 hill will a 90 degree bend half way up - I've never tried hill climbing and guess I'd be pretty crap

yeah the traction control is just a warning to brace yourself for impact, it aint saving the car at all.
