I was on I-10 near Tallahassee a few nights ago heading home and I noticed a pair of headlights closing on me from the rear at very high speed. I had my cruise set on 80 and as it passed me I took a guess at its speed at well over 120mpg and thought it was likely around 140mph to 150mph. My quick glance at the rear of the car made me pretty sure it was a GT500.
I started watching my rear view mirror for the telltale blue lights if Florida Highway Patrol in chase mode but none appeared. What DID appear in about 15 seconds were several other cars closing fast as well. I thought "what the heck?". When they passed me at about 120mph the unmistakable sound of souped up rice burners with loud exhausts hit my ears. LOL
They all exited at the same exit I did and when we turned left from a 3 lane exit onto a 3 lane road the rat pack (as I choose to call them) was doing their best to jockey for position creating a sound not unlike a bunch of angry bumblebees.
We all got stopped by a couple of stoplights and then we all turned right onto another highway and a short way down that road all the rat pack turned into a Shell gas station at once and I drove on by. I really wanted to stop and find out what was going on but I was headed home from a 12 hour work day and I was pretty exhausted so I didn't.
The story I came up with in my head was that they (possibly members of a car club) were all hauling a$$ down the interstate and when they tried to pass the GT500 he decided to show them what a really fast car could do and raced on ahead of them leaving them with the most familiar view they usually had of a Mustang which of course was the rapidly disappearing rear of the car.
I guess I'll never know but the Mustang was clearly WAAAAY ahead of them and that's all I know for sure.
I don't know about y'all but I find the exhaust note from hopped up rice burners to be annoying and the sweet music produced by Mustang GT's to be very pleasing.
So label me an elitist if you want but I LOVE my Mustang and wish I'd had the nerve to speed ahead of them too but I'm too afraid of a speeding ticket.
I suppose that people like that all use radar detectors but I haven't owned one since the 80's and don't intend to buy one and end up going waaaaaay too fast.
