A/C Dash Vent Replacement

2020 PP1 so I have two gauges and two round vents in the center of the dash. One of the vents is broken and needs to be replaced. I have watched videos where pliers are used and the vent is just pulled out through the dash and the new one pushed back in and I have watched videos where the dash has had to come off, the gauges disconnected and the vent pushed out from behind. I would really like to be able to just grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out, has anyone done this successfully?

If it's already broken what is there to lose in trying? If it doesn't work then fall back the dash disassembly option.
