Take it from me the Ford policy in the UK is to strip and repair and they have procedures in place do that. Yes the externally looks like the one of the transit but the internals are bespoke to the Mustang and not interchangeable. (Although the basic layout as you say is familiar) Parts have to come in from the US and can take some time....

MT82 is an MT82 what ever it’s fitted to. Ratios maybe dofferent, but the internals will be the same other than number of teeth on gears.

The input shafts are different and the bearings are different. Had to wait for mine from the US

Oh, OK thanks. I stand corrected.

It would be interesting to know if “different” means “improved” or “cheaper”?

If it's the same gearbox as a 125bhp transit in a 400+bhp car I'm hoping improved

You seem to have forgotten this is Ford we’re talking about here? look at the success of their “new and improved” MT82 for the ‘18’s.

I don’t think it all comes down to power though. We must consider the hearing overall, engine torque and weight. My Defender may only have 125 odd horsepower, but it has loads of torque, tall tyres and can tow 3.5 tonnes legally.

So the car went into the local Ford garage today. The gearbox needs to come out but they say they can't do it. Needs to go to the other garage 110 miles away.
Have a feeling this is going to drag out

Other garage? As in a Ford Store? Feel stressed for ya mate. Engage Ford customer services if you need to, if anything is not up to your expectations. They have extra clout with the dealerships. I would be asking them to cover the cost of transport - and wouldn't expect it to be driven!

For what its worth, if the dealership is any good, then it shouldn't drag out. You know about my drama - 9 weeks & 3 visits. A competent dealership should have turned it around in 2 weeks.

My advice - don't just leave them to it. Ask for daily updates, ask to speak directly to technicians, hassle them if you feel like something is taking longer than expected!

Good luck

Yeah, it's another Ford store.
Will need to get it transported but the garage forgot to renew my breakdown cover at my last service so need to wait for that to go through first.
Hopefully it's nothing like what you had to go through!

Thanks for all the help/advice
