3.73 diff. Broken @ 3k miles

Like the title says rear diff broken at 3000 miles. Being fixed under warranty. Dealer says it is due to hard driving. Car has not seen a race track. Hopefully it was a rare issue from the factory and it won't happen again. This happen to anyone else or am I the only one?

How did it manifest itself? I work on these axles. Did you lose preload?

It started backing out of a parking space. Felt like when someone put a stick in bicycle spokes. Thought I backed over something so I got out and looked and all was clear. went to pull forward and the same thing happened again was basically locking the tires in the rear. Got a lot worse over the next 24 hours. Also a lot of banging and metallic noises.

Got the car back today. What should be the best break in procedure to make sure it does not break again?

Learn to preload your driveline when you launch. Dont have to be at a drag strip to break weak torsen differentials. Thats how to prevent unnecessary wear and or damage

Was differential rebuilt? Mine was but because my car took a hit into the curb

Did you ever go to a prep track? What rpms did you launch at? Street or track? Or you have never ever launched it?

I never launched the car once. I am not into the drag race thing. I am a fast corners / lap time kinda guy.

Not sure if they used what they could to rebuild it or if they put in a whole new unit. What ever they need to do for warranty replacement of a broken rear diff is what they did. They said these 3.73 Torsens are hand built.

The Torsen diffs are built on an assembly line and installed into the carrier on the same production line at Sterling Axle as any other S550 axle assembly. Not sure where the "hand built" came from. See if you can find out what the dealer actually found, and what they actually replaced.

I was told that they don't sell the actual units for these cars. There's an actual rebuilt kit that is sold and that's what they did to mine, but everyone is full of BS so it could be true or could be false.

Such a nonsense response from a dealer, sure there's a line leading up to abuse but its like driven hard? What do you think this care is built for, by Ford...? To get groceries?

See if you can find out what the dealer actually found, and what they actually replaced.

Gears severly worn, case worn from gears cutting into it, all bearings and gears packed with fine metal and pitted, diff fluid came out as a metalic sludge.

That is what they found, they replaced the whole thing, no rebuild.

Hard driving, hand built. What's the name of this dealership so others can avoid them. I never read so much bullshit in a single thread before.

When did you order/receive your car? This is interesting because I am aware of an issue that was fixed. But would depend where you were in the build order timing wise.
