My wife and I are expecting our first child and I really do not want to get rid of the stang just yet. I'm going to start looking for an affordable 2nd car and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.
How much is affordable? Personally I would look at the mazda 6 if it's in your range. I had a 2014 which I traded in for my Mustang. If I could have kept both I would. They are a fantastic value and an amazingly roomy, comfortable, sporty, fun to drive sedan.
I had a 5MT Focus SE hatchback that I used as a DD back when I had a GT500. Great little car, and inexpensive to operate. Used or new it would be a great choice for a family car and DD.
12+ Focus manual, 06+ Civic manual, 10+ Mazda3 manual. They're both reliable, not super boring but practical and because of them being manual and not ST or Si, are cheap.
Your going to want a 4dr. I would look at Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3. Then if you need more room, look to the Accord, Camry Mazda 6. Maybe even look at the Jettas and Golfs. My wifes car is a 2016 Jetta GLI.
I found out in May that we're also expecting (due January). She has a Fusion, so we're gonna try and make do with the Mustang. Due to the Mustang's stiff suspension, I'm gonna try and use the Fusion as much as possible for at least the first 6 months.
As for a second car suggestions: go to this website (http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/TSP-List) and click on cars you are interested in, then watch the videos of rear seat damage during tests. Pick one with least amount of damage.

My wife loves her Ford Flex. We got her 2012 in 2014 and CPO. My daughter would love it for her 2 kids. Tons of room. You may even find a used one with the optional Par 3 golf course behind the 2nd row of seats
