'23 Mach 1, approx 7k miles, manual. It's bugged me for a bit but doesn't seem to be a major issue, least hasn't gotten worse. When I reverse say into a parking spot or my garage which is on any amount of incline I get a decently loud groan. I can't identify if it's coming from the transmission or the rear end. It is a rotational noise and from the drive train somewhere, it's not wheel rub. However, it could be confused with a "rubber" rubbing something type sound. I would think if it was a rear diff issue it would have gotten a lot worse but it's unchanged. The only other notice is a slight whine on decel from the rear gear at highway speed, but I think I understand this is normal.

Thought about getting the dealership to look at it, but I A: don't trust dealership mechanics and B: don't want to get told it's a "characteristic of the vehicle". Put the car on my lift and did a visual inspection and everything looks just fine on first look. Diff temperature seems to run within spec so it's not getting super hot or something to indicate a bad gear setup, but wouldn't expect that from the factory.

Any other thoughts on what might be going on here?

I am with you on the irritating "that is a normal characteristic" or " they all do that" my answer is "then they to all need to be fixed."

Having said that, I will note that my 21 has had a slight whine in reverse since new. I just assumed it was in the Trimec and not something to be overly concerned about.

Maybe someone here will explain why ,and if it is "normal".

my 21 M1 did that when backing up the driveway with a slight turn in the wheel. I forgot about it and it never worsened while I had the car.
Mine was a tremec too.

Mine does the same thing, any backing with a wheel turn and there is a groan.
No dealer has touched my car since I bought it 2 years ago and I have little intention of that ever happening.

Dealer is only touched mine once for the steering rack recall. They came out to my house, and almost hooked up the jumper cables on my battery backwards...

Sounds like the consensus is this is normal, that's good to hear.

I’ve attested it to it being a straight cut gear in a “race transmission”

I'm not familiar with the specifics of the TR3160 but it's common in many manual transmissions to use narrow/compact spur gears for reverse instead of quiet but wider helical gears since Reverse is not a normal driving mode. The gear whine is an acceptable compromise for allowing more space for the core transmission. Check out the gear whine on the 10R80 oil pump drive gears. Ford uses narrow spur gears with expensive processes to mitigate noise but the whine is inherent to the design. GM thought they're go one step better to quiet down the noise with a helical gear replacement for their 10L80 version but the noise is still an issue because the helical gears need to be wider have any real benefit and the packaging space just isn't available.

Mine is super noisy in reverse too. I use reverse in mine long enough to get out of the garage and onto the sloped part of my driveway then mine gets popped into neutral, the sound goes away at that point while I roll down the length of the driveway and out into the road..
