Maybe a stupid question...but here goes. I have a 2022 Mach 1, that I ordered and purchased. When I picked up the Mach at the dealership I noticed inside the center console a flat panel of high basis weight non-woven fabric. The fabric had been die cut to fit the bottom of the console. The fabric was not really in place as though it was just tossed in the console. It struck me as bit cheesy but no big deal and I carried on with my life.

Recently I was reading a post on the forums here and someone had a picture of the inside of their console and they had a molded rubber pad in the bottom of the console. I looked up the part number of the molded pad and ordered one through my local dealer. The molded pad fit perfectly. This raised my interest. I was employed by a Tier 2 automotive part manufacturer for the last 14 years of my career and I knew weird things happen. (We manufactured the moldable substrate for the Rear Seat Delete option on the S550 and I believe the package panel substrate below the rear window)

My questions are 1) At some point, did Ford substitute the flat fabric pad in place of the molded pad? or 2) Was this a temporary thing due to Covid parts shortage?

Interacting post and pics of the part that was in your S550.

Do you happen to know what the build date is of your vehicle? You can see on the driver side VCL affixed to the B-pillar. It should have a month/year on that label, usually it was near top left corner on prior Mustangs (not near mine to check).

That may answer the possibility of it being a “COVID” substitution of the original part - IF that was happening during that time (parts substitutions).

However in other posts on here and SSM’s I’ve come across, after MY 2018, Ford was deleting components from vehicles (not just S550’s). For instance if the 2018 had a glove box light and then all of the sudden the 2019 did not…. Things like that.

There were a few things deleted from the S550’s as production years were getting closer to S650. Some say it’s “cost savings” but is it or isn’t it, we don’t know for sure unless someone from the line can tell us. It’s possible it was parts shortages, COVID, supplier issues or they dropped a certain contractor/vendor because of XYZ which then affected that part being in the next MY production cycle of their products.

Definitely keep the original part, it’s a discussion piece for the future…

Thanks for the reply. My car was built in August of 2022 with a Blend Date of 08/11.

I plan to keep the original fabric piece. One other oddity, when I looked up part numbers for a 2022 console, there was only the rubber mat listed as the tray.....At least from what I could see using on-line dealers like Levittown.

I think my Mach 1 was built around the same time. I’ll check what’s in my console…..

The part you purchased appears to be what is called for, for sure. I looked for "supersedes" or "superseded by" and could not find anything.

Even into late 2023 I encountered companies using COVID as an excuse for delivery, lack of it, or substitutions. So you probably cannot necessarily go by that excuse, nor assume the integrity of such an excuse.

My 2022 gt has a fabric piece in the bottom of the center console. Built in November 2022. See attached pictures.
Thanks, Jerry

I just ordered one of these molded console bottom, about $20 plus shipping
Once again part number
FR3Z-6313586-AA
from what I saw looks like it's for 2015-23
I hate to say it, but ford cheaped it out here...

Adding the molded mat to the console is a modest, yet satisfying upgrade to those that have the fabric tray in their console. It would be interesting to see if the console tray substitution from molded mat to die cut fabric was a permanent change or a temporary change.
