I’m thinking of adding a VMP blower to a 2020 GT with auto trans. I don’t track or race the car. Is it necessary to install the OPG/CSS billet parts? Anyone know of any engine failures for street driven auto cars that didn’t have the billet stuff installed? I think the free-revving manual cars are more likely to fail from engine harmonics than an automatic transmission car.

Not exactly……I did have them installed on my 2016 GT/Magnuson SC car, but heard (from VMP directly) that they dont install the billet gears when they do SC installs. Im just curious if anyone here has heard of an automatic 18+ car having an engine failure due to stock OPGs.

You’re going to get numerous conflicting answers. Some people break the stock stuff. Some people have had issues with the aftermarket stuff. Most people have no issues at all no matter which route they take.

I don’t think it’s necessary on a tame setup and I didn’t do them when I did the Whipple install on my 2019.

Im kinda thinking the same thing…..Im 54 years old and never race my cars. I may do a “spirited run” getting into the rev limiter, but Im not continual BOUNCING off the limiter. From what I understand, its the manual cars that are driven really hard and they are revving the hell out of their motors. The harmonics are part of the equation as well. Those harmonic vibrations cause stress cracks and failure. Like a wine glass and an opera singer. The other train of thought is the added torque placed on the snout of the crank. Its only another $1100 total (including parts), for my mechanic to do them. I may do it since a motor is a lot more than that. Budget is tight though, so thats why I posted the question.

it's just my opinion.
if budget is tight I won't add a supercharger because something else will break. it will cost you more than just a supercharger alone.
I would not do opg and roll the dice and save the money toward a new built motor, but
opg and parts only cost $1100 to install is so cheap why would you not doing it.

This is the real truth. Stock is safe.

Everything I've read/seen leads me to think the OPG issues are more RPM related than just HP related. I have a Ford Performance supercharger on my 15 auto and never changed the gears. I track it a couple times a year, stay off the limiter and don't beat it like it owes me money. Maybe I'm rolling the dice but I don't think they're mandatory. my 2 cents, stay off the limiter and you'll be fine. YMMV

I am 52 years old and drive my cars too hard on the street to not be at least a little concerned so I bought Boundary OPG's & crank sprocket in preparation for my Whipple Gen 5. I have a manual so I will be doing them at the time of install. Just "cheap" insurance to me, but according to many the auto cars are in a different boat. I will probably hit the track a couple of times a year, but mostly daily the car and have to let these guys in the Infiniti G37's, M4's and such, know they aren't the only game in town ;)

The OPG/CS aren't required but really isn't a bad idea when adding boost and higher RPM's. The stock OPG is one of the weaker points of the Coyote motors. When replacing the OPG you might as well go ahead and throw a billet crank sprocket on there since the stock CS has to come off anyways so no extra labor so why not replace with a stronger piece.

The only down fall to replacing the OPG/CS is money, if your stock OPG cracks you're going to loose oil pressure and that is never a good day and will end up costing you more money with a new motor.

Hit me up and I can get a set on the way to you!

I sent 2 rods through an 18+ block, completely distinegrated 2 pistons to fine dust particles, and spun a rod bearing.

BUT

My OPG and CS were in perfect condition.

True story.

What do you blame for the failure? And how much HP were you making?

913whp at 13-14 psi.

I blame hight IAT's, low fuel in the tank, and factory piston ring gaps that were waaaaay too tight for boost.
