2018 Mustang refresh?

Hate both.

All of the mustang mules in camoflauge lately, seem to look like GT350's in disguise. (quad exhaust & lower front bumper like GT350)

Likely scenarios... hey're working on something like a GT500 with similar high performance parts, or they're trying out some GT350 like parts for the 2018 GT's.

Keep in mind the Coyote S197 refresh (2013) made it so every Mustang got a GT3500 front end (basically).

It wouldn't surprise me if the refreshed front end is basically a GT350 without the fender vents, etc.

Certainly possible, but they'd probably keep the hood (center vent and lower) and like you said, fender vents, unique to the Shelby and just migrate the grille style to the base car. The rear valence, or a version of it, would also come with an active quad exhaust option.

I think the hood profile will be lower like the GT350, but with different venting features. I expect something similar with the front fenders, though I'm not sure how the vent feature could be deleted entirely in a manner that wouldn't blow out the hip optics. I don't believe the front or rear fascias will be derivative at all though, except for (perhaps) the inclusion of a more pronounced diffuser element.

It could happen, but I thought European pedestrian safety laws were defining the height of the hoods on Mustangs. The GT350 hood doesn't conform to those rules (being too close to the engine underneath).

I suppose it would be possible to use a nose that looks like a GT350 and then some type of transition to the higher hood that is required in order to sell the car in Europe.

Which is more reason to switch to a rear transaxle for the S650 with flywheel driven accessories. Engine assembly moves back several inches and GT350 profile hood meets euro standards. Boom

Yeah, I know. This in no way helps with the refresh. Perhaps they can just use one hood for euro, and another for everyone else:shrug:

Not quite.

Ford have kept it pretty quiet, but the "rest of the world" Mustangs have an "active" hood. There are small explosive devices near the hinges, and these are designed to raise the hood in the event of an accident. The theory being if it's a pedestrian that's been hit, the raised hood means they won't hit their head on the hard points of the engine.

You can see here, where one of our poor UK friends has recently bent his......you can see how the hood is raised up at the rear as a result of the explosive device activating.

So, in theory, if the '18MY has a lower hoodline, it'll still work for the rest of the world as long as this device is fitted

The lowered 1" hood would be nice. I think they realized as they developed the GT350 that the visibility was much better.

Maybe LED lighting that is similar in nature to the new Fusion but the fascia will be GT350 centric but again not the same as the GT350s.

Maybe even a change in the rear lights that move towards more of an Audi like design while keeping the tri bars in some way.

The active hood is a Euro thing, and would be a way for the GT350 style lowered hoodline to be exportable.

Depending on where Ford is on overseas backorders and US demand, MY17 might shortened?

10,000+ sales a month would have pushed a refresh back to 2019 for sure.

This is interesting:
The Mustang's recent decline in the US market has been offset by foreign demand. Last year, around 4000-4500 Mustang's shipped overseas a month. This year, 5000-6000 are shipped a month. By 2017, overseas Mustang sales could match the US sales.


After the overseas market open up completely, in the first 12 months, 27,000 RHD sold, 20,000 sold in Europe minus the 6000 in the UK. Another 10,000 go to the random countries all over the world.

We don't know yet, Ford hasn't even revealed the 2018's to the general public.

We'll know for sure by the end of January, my guess is sooner.

I think MY'17 might be a shorter run...'17s went on sale in April and hit lots in early June where the year before '16s didn't get going till May and didn't hit lots till mid August. Not much changed in '17 so you could just see if they decide to just get the '18s out especially if it's as big as an upgrade as people are leaking.

My guess would be mid April for orders and on the lots in June like the '17s. Ford seems to realize that a sports car should have a early summer release...not a Sept/Oct release.
