Hi,

I need to change an engine in my 2019 R. I can get used one 2018 R with 1200 miles or obviously new one from the delaer. Is there any diiferences beside block from GT500? Any durbality, longevity etc?

I tried to search and read varied topics but could not find clear answer. I'm asking about R models only. I know that there were a differences in engine between regular GT350 and R before facelift in 2019 but how about let's say 2016 R vs 2020 R?

Are you hard tracking your car?

What’s the reason for needing the replacement? I would not put a sub year engine in the car.

Occasionaly i will visit Nurburgring 🙂 And maybe few regular tracks.
Then it would depend on the deal you are getting on the 2018 engine. If it was a deal, I would buy it, and then do a refresh on it and do some upgrades. If you are not pushing the car hard, I might just plop it in and be done with it. If you go the dealer route out of warranty, its going to cost a lot of money.

He could keep the old engine, do a refresh on it, and be able to go back and forth as needed.

That's what I would do.

I had a front minor damaged but car ran without oil. Better to change all engine than repair.

2018 its a 7k cheaper than from a dealer.
What do you mean by refresh? And some uprgrades.

no on the upgrades. Partial teardown to replace rings, valve components, maybe pistons, etc. A thorough refresh on an engine would run about 10K and you would be better off than a brand new engine. @honeybadger has been down this road frequently. I believe he told me a light refresh would run about $5K, a more thorough refresh about $10K, and if you want to go full on nuts with it, the sky is the limit.

As an alternative, you can just do a rebuild on the engine you have now and those prices (if they are still valid) would be applicable. Rebuilding the current engine would be dependent on its condition. Obviously a cracked block or major damage is not applicable.

Nah, he had a viscious run in with a Camarah leaving Costco. Had to win that battle.

If it was a 5.0 coyote engine, I would offer different advice. You could pick them up at the junkyard all day long.

There are some differences between the 18 and the 19 although not as many as the pre 18 base engine. Honestly, Id rebuild the original

Can you elaborate on that? Is the block screwed like Tomster brought up? Was it running, lost oil, and seized? I can see more of an issue with your location and availability of parts then if it can be brought back to standard.

I see. Thanks for an explanation. It’s a major damge so new engine required. So no need to go after new one from the dealer and be short around 7k
