Did you paint these yourself as opposed to (Shadow Black) take-offs? If you did, were they painted OEM code UA?

Yes I am a certified 22 year paint technician and they were sprayed with BASF Diamont R-M Base D403 Black and BASF Diamont DC 5335 Glamour Clearcoat. Not sure if UA is straight D403 but most blacks are. I wanted them straight black and not GM's black for example which has some yellow and other colors that dilute the black.

I also sprayed a coat of BASF plastic adhesion sealer as a ground coat.

Any idea how this compares to the black of the black accent package?

Well they are gloss black so they will look the same as the accent package and the upper grille.

Hopefully you don't mind the thread hijack ... :like:

As you painted those yourself, how did you strip / prep the parts ?

Did you remove the honeycomb mesh or did you just mask it ?

If you removed it, how did you get it out ?

If you masked it, how did it turn out ?

On the set I have the mesh and surround are a tight fit - tight enough to be difficult to mask but with just enough movement where if a bit of paint got on the mesh, it would most likely crack at the joint and look a bit messy after a bit of use ...

As i'm not sure what to do for the best, any help would be really appreciated :like:

Cheers,

WD :like:

Well I didn’t want to complicate things and they are already painted from the factory so I just sanded and scuffed the whole vent making sure there was no shiny areas left so the paint would adhere, sprayed some plastic sealer adhesion promoter on the mesh part of the vent because it was raw plastic and then based the whole vent black and then cleared it all. 2 thin but wet coats of base and clear and they look better than new. Now if you were painting them to match the car then you’d have to figure out how to remove the vents or just mask them off. When I need to fine line stuff without a thick line I just fine line it off last and remove it after clear coat so it doesn’t leave a thick line.

Ok, I not only purchased the hood vents but I sent the OP my new mirror caps for him to paint to match. I finally got around to installing them this week after a quick hand polish and wax. Overall I happy with the purchase.
BTW, it gets really dirty under the hood vents, dirt catcher for sure...

Very nice! How hard was it to change the mirror caps?
