CADILLAC UNBUNDLES OPTION PACKAGES

Yesterday we reported on how Cadillac boosted transaction prices by an average of $5,000 per car last year. One of the ways they figured out how to do that is by unbundling option packages. Automakers like to bundle optional equipment because that makes the assembly process simpler. But that can also make those packages pretty expensive. For example, if you wanted a panoramic sunroof on your Cadillac, the mandatory upgrades and package could come close to $10,000. That was too big of a step for most most customers who simply would not buy it. So now Cadillac is unbundling its options, and wow, is it working. On the Cadillac CTS alone transaction prices shot up by $8,000. In the luxury segment, at least, you can afford to be a little bit more inefficient at the assembly plant by letting your customers buy cars the way they want them.

The Mustang outsells the CTS by 3-4x. That makes a big difference in the manufacturing process.

Also, if you're going to use the CTS as an example, then realize it's just more options for interior trim, not mechanical options.

For example... Do you want a glove box CD player? Heated front seats? Two kinds of floor mats? Seven different kinds of dash trim?

Take the CTS V-Sport.. The GT has roughly almost the same amount of clickable boxes.

I had to wait until 2003 to get the Cobra 4.6 motor with an auto - Mach1. The Challenger and Camaro offer their highest performance motors with an auto. Seems like Ford is missing many potential buyers with this type of thinking. I work at a dealership and see many customers looking for Mustangs with autos.
Don't get me started about the lack of a glass roof/sunroof option, but that is another topic.
