2017 GT w/PP vs. 2017 STI?

Here's the matchup as I see it, but please correct me where I'm wrong...

Mustang-

Much more comfortable ride
Slightly cheaper
Easier and cheaper to maintain
Significantly better looking (in my opinion)

STI-

AWD which means year round driver even in snow
Slightly faster
Better handling (due to AWD)
Functional back seat
Seems like it'd last for more miles (so long as the turbo is cared for/replaced)

Where am I wrong or missing info?

A gt would stomp an sti stock for stock in all performance metrics. My dd is an sti. Not my first subaru either. Also not my first mustang either. There is a good reason subie gets dd duty and the fun car is a mustang.

I'll be honest, I'm a DIE HARD subaru fan. I've been driving them since my 92 Loyale...with the spare tire in he engine...

Last weekend I rebuilt the passenger front axle under my wife's 06 Legacy and the week before it was the front brakes in my 02 Forester.

I never knew the STI was slower. I thought I remembered a thread last year where people were saying the Stang would have trouble keeping up with an STI in both 0-60 and top end. I guess I heard wrong.

Blahaha a Gt would walk all over an sti. The sti is probably easier to drive fast due to awd though. The Mustang has a significantly better power to weight ratio and has more grunt everywhere.

i just had 3 buddys bail from subby.. there fine stock soon as you start pushing there limits .. pop goes a ringland . and my one friend had a fully built sti 08 though. putting down 500 to the wheels .. key word fully built like 8k in the motor and turbo alone .. put 8k into a stang and your well above 500 wheel .. i owned a 05 legacy gt. basic subby mods.. catless dp, cb exhaust and a tune, great daily but fast not so much. guess its what you like in the end its your car payment ..

Two words: Snow Tires!

Unless you live in Canada or upstate New York, you really don't need AWD if you are a competent driver and have a good set of snow tires in the colder months.

Sti's are practical fun cars. Useable backseat.decent sized trunk. Actually hold 4 Passengers. It's not as pretty as a Mustang. Doesn't put down the performance numbers of the Stang. But I can see the appeal of the subie.

my wrx had bolt ons and e85 made 360/390 on the dyno and my mustang would destroy it in every aspect of speed. i live in ny, i made it thru winter with the mustang. and the ej motor is prob the biggest piece of crap motor..spending 40k on an sti that needs a rebuilt motor to make any reliable power is a joke

agree with above ..... my leggy made 300hp/340 trq wheel . protune and bolt ons..which isnt bad for a "family" subuaru lol ...but to dump money into it to make it faster.. just isnt worth the time and effort imo

Why would you cross shop the two? Most folks cross shop the STI with Evo's, Golf R, etc.

The 5.0 is big rumbling V8 where NO 4 banger will ever replicate. Sure you can tune, mod the crap of the the 4 turbos but it will never have the V8 rumble and not to mention you can do the same.
NO ONE looks twice at a the 4 banger turbos (STI is the least attractive looking one).. In the Mustang, you will have presence.

And no, no stock subie is walking a stock 5.0. It may be close due to the quicker acceleration but that's about it.

Hes cross shopping the two because he likes them. Subies have plenty of "rumble". You can get 1000whp out of an sti for about the same cost as a coyote reliably. You cant speak for what everyone choses to look twice at. Plenty of people like awd cars. I have about 20g wrapped up in my dd sti that has mid 700whp cranked up on e85. All the supporting mods for a gt to do that might run about 15-17g. Subies have plenty of "presence ". Maybe not to you but to other people they matter.

As for subie reliability it depend if you buy quality stuff and dont listen to the majority of the idiots on nasioc and iwsti on how to mod your car. Ive never had a single one blow up. All of mine have been modded to the same level roughly. Between the 4 ive had, ive put over half a million miles on them cumulatively. I was also a subaru master tech at one point before i went to ford, and now at bmw. The majority of subarus dont shit the bed. Not all tuners are created equal, there is only a handful of worth while tuners in the subaru community. Odds are , you're using a shit tuner too with following the typical subie mod list.

Sti is not faster than a GT. STi is a 13 sec car, the GT a 12 sec car. From what I hear the new STi's are slower than the previous generations, much like the Evos were. The STi I believe will be cheaper to maintain considering you're talking Japanese/Subaru quaility. Not to mention you won't have to buy tires as often. Sure you can dump money in the STi to make it a monster but so can with the GT. Install a supercharger on a GT already at 500-600 at the wheels. How much would you have to spend on an STi to do that?
But as someone mentioned they are 2 different classes of cars. If I was shopping for a GT I wouldn't look at an STi, and vice versa.

I had an 05 WRX lightly modded, turbo back, tune, intake, IC piping and thats it. Put down 244.13/268.77 to the wheels. I had an 08 STI (1st year of the hatch) Cobb and Perrin tunes, intake, IC piping, and a cat back. Put down 262.63/311.94 to the wheels.

I had a 13GT with LT's, tune, intake, and mufflers put down 402.18/370.53 to the wheels. My 15GT I had not dynoed, but has intake, tune, and cat back probably making similar power to my 13GT. I can say dollar for dollar mod for mod. The Mustang is the winner in the performance category.

Now having the Mustangs I dont think I could ever go back. DD or not. I would take winter wheels/tires over AWD with summer tires too.

I owned two STi's before I bought my 2016 GT. I actually almost bought another one when I was looking at the mustang. What it came down to for me, personally, was that Subaru is using the same tired ass tech and motor that they used over 10 years ago.
If you want out of the box performance, 10+ year old technology just won't get it done, especially for $40kish
