Does the 2015 V6 have a flat plane crankshaft?
No, V6s can't have flat plane crankshaft. It won't fire right if it does.
The pistons would fire at different intervals and very unbalanced.

Ecoboost has a flat plane crank!

Little bit of my first year engineering class here. The only way for an engine to have a flat plane crank and still have an even firing order so as to have a chance to not have horrible nvh is to have its's cylinder bank angle be divisible by it's firing angle.

take an inline 4, think about it as a v4 with a 360 degree bank angle, it fires every 180 degrees (720/4)360 is evenly divisible by 180 =2

A V8 fires every 90 degrees (720/8=90) so a 90 degree bank angle works. if you make a cross plane crank with 90 lobe seperation you could have a perfectly smooth engine, However v8's share rod journals which means at 90 degree bank angles you get some vibration. A flat plane crank on a 90degree V8 is possible, it is basically two I4s joind at the crank but a 90degree bank angle means those secondary vibrations don't cancel out.

A flat 8 is butter smooth.

Now Why cant we have flat plane crank V6s? you would need a V angle of 120 degrees like the old Ferrari Dino to have an even fire order. half of that works though so 60 degrees with crank throws 120 degrees apart will be fairly smooth.

A flat plane 60 degree V6 would have an uneven fire order and would be ipmossible to balance properly

Even Porsche F6s can't have flat planes

Interesting. Thanks for the good explanation.

Some Porsches have a flatplane 6 engine
No they don't, flat 6 yes flat crank no, It would be impossible to have an even fire order on one making it have

As you can see the crank is has 120 degree throw seperstion.

Flat engine yes, flat crank no.

as you can see throws are 120 degrees out not 180.

a flat 6 engine with a flat crank could never have an even fire order and would vibrate like hell.

Oh okay, I guess i thought a flat 6 meant flatplane crank, but its actually flat like a subaru boxer engine layout?

ok, so then we also have flat plane. sweet. no wonder they rev so nicely :) also, the intake sound is semi gt350-ish :p

I was noticing how narrow the motor was, even with DOHC, I guess that's because its a 60 deg V. also, ive heard these motors are called a "even fire"....does that mean theres 2 cyl at once going off?

No, we do not have a flat plane. The 3.5 eco does not have flat plane either. The Ecoboost Glenn was referring to that has a flat plane is the 4cyl.

An uneven fire v6 is one based on a V8 90 degree architecture using a non split pin V6 crank,
So here is the video of the 3.5 ecoboost teardown ford did. At 1:49 you get a nice clear view of the 120 degree totally conventional V6 crank. [ame]
Sorry but the only thing your or my engine shares with a Voodoo is that it was made by Ford.

The pistons are horizontally apposed just like subaru boxer engines except 6 cylinder can't have flat plane crank where the 4 cylinders can.
