99% sure all US spec S550s get HIDs. Overseas models may not use them or may be optional.

No. There are 2 Types of Headlights. There is a Halogen Projector setup and an HID Projector Setup. I believe Base Models get the Halogen and Premium Models get the HID's. The Easiest way to spot the Difference is the Halogens have Black Trim around the Side Markers and the HID's have Silver trim around the Side Markers as well as the LED "Gills". Not sure if the "Gills" are lighted on the Halogen Equipped Cars or not. I haven't seen any pictures of them lit except on the HID Equipped cars.
For North America, the HID lamps are standard across the board. The halogens will be available in some other markets only.

Good grief, don't tell me that on top of those naff clear tail lights, the "Euro" car is going to get halogens?

https://mustang.ford.eu/?fmccmp=other-nwp-mustangucl-homepage-promopanel#/de-DE

It's a bit difficult to tell on the computer generated images on the link........but the "blue-ish" light would indicate HIDs, and it looks like a chrome surround around the amber section........but it's not that clear.

However, the car definitely does NOT have the 3 LED gills lit (which I'm assuming they always are, if the ignitions on??)

I believe, at least in the UK, that HIDs equipped cars need self leveling of the headlamps AND a wash function. Neither of which I believe S550 comes with :(

Full LED headlights and LASER light headlights are the future, thanks in part to Audi, who has lead the way in innovative headlights.

Old filament yellow tinged halogen light bulbs are so dated now. I like the HID types for the s550, but I can't wait till ford has a full LED production array headlight ready to go, hopefully in the near future.
the F150 gets the LED headlamps for the 2015 year... actually alot if not all are LED. Audi is praised for their laser headlight projection but unfortunately is not legal here in the states until a few oldschool laws are dropped or revised. I read that about the new Audi R8 LMS... pretty damn awesome

I noticed I haven't seen any headlight washers on any cars, even ones with clear tails and dumbo mirrors. It could be that EU gets halogens, but that sounds backwards! I would think of anything, EU would expect the headlights to be HID.

I also meant to add, any car recently type-approved for Europe (it was something like since last April) have to have DRLs.

Unless the lower turn signal car also be used as a DRL, then it would make more sense for us to have the HIDs, along with their 3 LED gills
