I'm looking to change my gears from 3.31 to 3.73. The mechanic is familiar with 2014 mustangs and just did a gear swap last week. He wants to know if the 2015 is and different than the 2014. I know the IRS but is there anything else?

I have a GT premium. Non pp. 6 speed manual

Its all different -- gears, bearings, axles, everything. It is an IRS axle vs. solid axle.

No offense, but I would not trust anyone working on my car that had to have me ask questions on an auto forum before he could work on it. I would go to someone who knows what they are working on. But that's just me I guess.

Yep, totally different. And I would also rethink a gear swap. The 3.31's are actually a pretty good gear.

I wouldn't trust that 'mechanic'....

and What's the goals with the car?

NA = more gear

blower = less gear

Well he builds custom rear ends so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem for him. He just hasn't seen my car yet or worked on a 2015. I don't know him I'm just looking for prices. There is a shop near me that specializes in mustangs tho, but wanted to compare prices.

Car is NA. Was just thinking it would pull a little harder with the 3.73s. Anyone driven both that can talk me out of it? Lol

Not always the case though.
Do elaborate where a moderately powered NA car would NOT benefit from a higher gear ratio?

Absolutely ZERO reason not to gear the car if you're planning to stick NA. There's a reason they put 3.73s in the PP cars :D

Well for one, ET/MPH goals in the 1/4mi will affect gear choice regardless of NA or FI. You don't want to have a gear so high you outrun the gear.

I don't really go to the track so I wouldn't be too concerned about shifting an extra time in the 1/4 mile. Mostly looking for some fun spirited driving

The place that specializes in mustang work quoted me $750 including the gears. With a one year warranty against noise or any other problems with the gears. Is that a decent price?

Then I would also have to buy the whipple flash device for $275 to reprogram the speedometer

Correct for a drag only car....However, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say not many NA 1/4 mile cars are running a 3.31...

However, I'm guessing OPs car is a street car, and therefore would benefit from a gear.

Zemedici how do you like your 3.73s? I know they require more shifting around town but I bought a manual expecting to shift
