Hi All
This thread will follow our 1968 Fastback restoration. This stang belonged to one of my my best friends since 1977. He bought it used and had it on the road since we met in 1978. He and his dad did lots of work on it back then. It was T boned on the passenger side and they repaired the rocker and door as well as installing a 1969, 4bbl 351W. It has 9” Ford N rear with 4:11s and top loader 4 speed. They also did all body and paint and it had a good life. It was on the road until late 90s then sat for a long time. That’s when things started going down hill and rust set in. In December 2018 he gave it to my son so he could bring it back to life. Started stripping it down in January 2019 but lost traction during 2020 during Covid. Today it left our garage for first time in the last 3 years. It’s heading out to a local body shop this week to take over what he started. To date he’s replaced the floor pans, torque boxes, front inner fenders, radiator support, front and rear frame rails, Shelby style rear panel, Meyers racing frame stiffeners and inner and outer cowl. Lots of drilling out factory spot welds!
The body shop will remove and install both full rear quarters (we’re using NPD and Dynacorn sheet metal parts) full rockers, door skins and front fenders. Long way to getting back on the road but hopefully back on track.
We intend to make a tasteful Shelby restomod. It will have modern suspension and brakes, modern ignition, refreshed 351W, manual trans and rear end. Not sure what trans we’ll use or interior or instrument cluster either…work in progress. Here’s how it looked back in 1979.

Here’s what it looked like in December 2018 when we brought it home.

That's great. I had a 68, 289, 2bbl, top loader 4 speed, light blue fastback in 1978/79. Did a bunch of engine work and converted to 4bbl, dual exhaust etc. Then I attempted my first auotbody repair to left rear quarter and found someone had about 4" of bondo holding it together! Wound op parting the stang out for Snap On goodies. Body was shot and not worth the effort at that time.

I remember going to Dover in early 60's with my family to some swimming hole for picnics. It was a popular place but can't remember the name or where it was. Probably covered over now as a parking lot!
I'll be posting more pics soon.

I’m almost done with a 67 GT s code 4spd.
You need to start a post. I'd like to see the progress.
My VIN shows ours was built in Metuchen plant in 1968 with 302 V8, 4bbl.

auto trans? auto trans? we don't need a stinking auto trans :cwl:
No auto trans in this baby! We may refresh the 4 speed top loader for now and switch to 5 speed later...but not an auto. And yes....its already expensive! 😀 At least my son got this as a free gift so starting out without that expense.

Awesome to see a car bro g put back on the road. It’s allot of work and time. At the end it’s all worth it though.

My first car was a used ‘68 GT coupe J code car (302 4bbl) in Highland Green. Had a hood mounted Dixico tach and chrome reverse wheels when I bought it. Following! And Good Luck on your Project!
