170* Tstat Questions

About to grab and install a 170 tstat...

Should I drain the coolant from the radiator first or just take apart the thermostat housing and drain from there.

How much coolant will I need to replace? If i grab a gallon off amazon will it be enough?

Should I just reuse the old coolant?

Any tips I should know?

1) *should* drain from the radiator. I wasn't jacking up my car and removing the bottom shield to access it so I let it drain from the housing and caught as much as I could
2) About 2 quarts if you do it right. When I did mine, I also changed the intake manifolds and ended up using 6 quarts because I messed up and missed a gasket when reinstalling.
3) A gallon should be fine, I'd buy it at your local dealership parts desk. Came out much cheaper than Amazon and I was surprisingly in and out.
4) No, might even say just flush the system while you're doing it.
5) Take your time, it isn't hard but there isn't a ton of space (at least on the V6, I think the V8 is easier to access)

Did this one a a few years ago. It's pretty easy. Get a little rubber hose and connect it to the nipple on the radiator and drain it. The housing is very easy to get to once the air intake is out of the way. Put a few towels beneath the thermostat housing connection to catch any excess coolant. It's straightforward and easy from there.

I just refilled my coolant with the Prestone brand coolant. It's the same stuff as the Ford one and GM Dex Cool for a ton cheaper. I think I got like 5 gallons of that stuff really cheap at Home Depot.
