Good work on the experimentation! What you did is essentially create a resonator, so I'm not surprised you got some effect. What I will say is that changing tip diameter by itself is unlikely to have any significant effect (or even measurable one), as the length of the tip compared to the length of the wave is very small. Yes, having a full axleback section from say, the differential to the muffler being 3" vs 2.5" can make a difference in sound level and tone, but that's because it's a long enough section.
