Hello! Assuming there will be a lot of new owners that haven't ventured into a turbo'd engine and how to go about upgrades I thought I would give a brief tutorial. This list is generated based on what has been discussed on the forums and a good mod path for power/reliability. I reframed from naming companies to buy parts from, you just need to do a lot of research on the companies offering whatever part you are looking for and compare to find what works best for you.
1. Oil Catch Can-Spark Plugs-Oil Should be your first upgrades. The catch can is a preventative maintenance measure to help prevent oil build up in your intake system due to CCV/PCV feeding blow by oil onto your intake valves. Spark plugs should be gapped at 0.027-28" and use NGK or Denso iridium 1-2 steps colder, must have if tuning. Get rid of stock oil for full synthetic; rotella t6 diesel, amsoil, Pennzoil ultra, mobil 1 etc etc.
2. Tuner Cobb(buy from maperformance for 1 free tune) SCT, Lund Gauge, Livernois tuner are some of the tuning devices/sources and there are multiple tuners to get custom tunes from. Check with all the tuning options and choose the one you find best to go with. You can run canned/OTS tunes ready to go. You also don't need the other bolt on mods before getting a tuner. Getting a custom and dyno tune is the most optimal means for getting a tune specifically for your car and setup once you get bolt ons.
3. Intercooler Also known as a FMIC (front mount intercooler) is what cools down the hot turbo air going to the engine, some have already been made by some of the aftermarket companies and have shown great gains. The EB has really bad heatsoak on the stock unit and can result in power loss on really hot days or repeated hard pulls. You can go for a kit with the hard pipes and a BOV too when getting an intercooler but not necessary. IC thread: http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15352
4. Exhaust Go for at least a catback system for back pressure and gains due to removing the restrictive factory resonator/mufflers. A full turbo back exhaust with the catalytic converter removed will be the best performance but will be significantly louder and have quite a fuel smell if you have a strait through exhaust, if you have chamber mufflers at the end of the exhaust you will not be ridiculously loud and not so much fuel smell. 5. Air Intake An air intake will give a turbo engine a small bump in power, also will increase the noticeable sound of the turbo spool and be able to hear the stock by pass valve dump compressed air back into the intake system due to the recirculation of our bvp setup. 6. BOV/BPV-Hard Pipes Stock bypass and blow off valves usually suck and start to leak boost down the road, you want to upgrade to a good name brand quality BOV(you can recirculate the air or vent to atmosphere, either will work for our engines). Most likely get a hard pipe kit to and replace the plastic stock bits on cold and hot side of the intercooler. There looks to be some options to just replace the stock by pass valve, just research and choose whichever you feel.
7. Suspension/Tires Unless you track the car the stock suspension is plenty good, especially if you have a performance package. Larger rear tire widths (275+) will be greatly beneficial to getting the power to the ground. Make sure the tire is designed for good grip, plenty of tire options out there.
8. Clutch Kit Should upgrade at some point if you are laying down quite a bit power over stock, car has not been out long enough to gauge how much or how long the stock unit can hold up.
9. Rear Gear Increases low end acceleration, limits high end speed, increases rpm at cruising. There has been some debate on this so I will update later as to what would be optimal for the rear gear. For now it is safe to say the 3.55 included in the performance package.
10. STS Short throw shifter, help reduce shifting but is more resistance, upgrade bushing too if they are applicable.
11. Meth injection Running meth is absolutely great for turbo'd engines, helps lower combustion temperatures, prevent pre detonation, runs fuel at higher octane. Plenty of kits out there, best results have your car tuned once meth kit is installed and functional.
12. E85 Fuel E85 fuel has become fairly popular in some areas, however it is not readily available depending on your location, killer power gains can be made. Need a custom tune for this.
This is for the most part the main ways to upgrade a turbo engine, you can get into pulleys, cams/porting and all that but really your next stop if you've gone this far is....
13. Turbo Upgrade There will be plenty of turbo upgrade kits coming down the road, this is where you can make the big numbers. The huge space in our engines bay due to the bays designed to fit V engines give us plenty of room for bigger turbos. Get kits that include all the necessary parts. Our engines have some good internals so it will be interesting to see how much the stock engine holds up. Currently 400 whp/wtq seems to be a safe limit to shot for on the stock internals.
