Forget KBB or NADA when trading in a vehicle anymore. Dealers now go by averages of what certain cars are selling for at the regional auctions.

The days of demanding what what NADA or KBB call for on your trade in are over at MOST dealers.

What is depreciation?!?! Again, I thought you could trade up every year for and lose out on a couple tanks of gas and an oil change or two.

You have nothing to worry about just search some threads and they will lead you down the yellow brick road. Didn't you know dealerships will sell you a car below the depreciation value so you can simply resell in a years time. Learned from the mighty wisdom folks here that all you have to do is search and now I'm making money. Hot d@mn right, flipping cars like pancakes!

I bought an '06 Windveil Blue V6 Mustang in 2008 for my daughter for '$12,500 and my daughter didn't want it so I put it in my shop for 2 years and traded it in 2010 for an '07 Tungsten Gray GT. I got $12,500 on trade for the '06 and paid $18,500 for the Tungsten Gray so out of pocket of $6k

I bought the used '07 Tungsten Gray GT in 2010 with 19,000 miles on it for $18,500, kept it for 2 years and traded it for a '13 GT in 2012. Dealership gave me $18,500 trade on it and I bought the brand new base model '13 GT in 2012 for $27,500. Differnce out of pocket was $9k.

I traded the '13GT in on a 2015 50th Anniversary Packaged Ebony GT in late July 2015 and I got $29,500 trade on the '13GT and paid $35,000 for the 2015 GT right off the showroom floor. Difference out of pocket was $5.5k

2016:

I kept the 2015 GT 2 months and traded it in Oct 2015 straight across for a 2016 Premium GT right off the transport truck. Signed the papers within minutes of it being taken off the truck and drove it home. Difference out of pocket was $0.

Try a Wrangler next time, they've got one of the highest resale values out there. Bought my '13 JKU sport new in 2012 for ~$31K. Sold for $30K a few weeks ago.

Granted I did have ~$10K in mods

Seriously, Ecboost premium, PP, Nav, Shaker pro, Parking sensers. $35,000 sticker. 3 months old with 3000 miles mint condition. KBB say $26,300. Thats ridiculous! I paid $21,000 for my Veloster and got $16,000 after 2 years. Traded in my 10 year old Toyota Corolla and got $4000, it was $16,000 new. American cars have the worst resale value...absurd...so glad I leased.

The only car I came out ahead on was a 2004 R32. I bought it used from a dealer with 7000 miles on it for $25k. Drove it for 2yrs and 18000 miles later I traded it in for $26.5k. It was traded in on an already negotiated new car, so no tricks with moving values of each car.

How did you get $29,500 for a used 2013 Base GT in late 2015? There is no way a dealership would give that much for the trade in. KBB says its only worth $23-24k at best. Just curious on how you made that deal.

Show me the math that has you coming out ahead on a 2 year lease vs buying.

So you paid $6000 in 2010, $9000 in 2012, $5500 in 2015 to switch cars..

On average, ~$2500 each year for ~8 years, not including the 1st car purchase price. So maybe you're beating depreciation in the short term and losing to it in the long term, so you can have different cars every couple years? And somehow I doubt you're getting the exact car you want every time, but the last one on the lot. How is that a good deal?

You'd probably be better off leasing. :headbonk:

To each their own, but I don't envy you. You're playing the dealership's game. Its like betting against the house - even when you win one, you're still losing in the long run.

If you kept the one car you loved for 10 years, you'd be ahead financially.
