Spare Tyre Options for Australian GT

There are plenty of wheels that will fit if you just want to throw one in the boot for trips, but if you want to keep one permanently in the boot that is a different story.
The front wheel fits in the wheel well but sticks up 85mm higher than the cover.
Rear wheel does not fit in the wheel well at all and needs to sit on top of the cover, so takes up most of the boot, and as it doesn't fit the front to me is a waste of time.

I have plenty of measurements and pics I can post up but work keeps getting in the way of my forum commitments

New avenue I am pursuing is a 7" wide 19" rim, with a 175 - 195 tyre.

I will put up a picture of a 245 / 35 / R19 from my FPV GT that I put on the front when doing this, jeez it looks small in that huge wheel arch.

Our Australian cars with the PP, do not have a Torsen Diff.
Out Diffs are standard LSD.

That seems weird wonder why they would do that?

We can buy crown and pinions for ration changes, I wonder if we could buy the whole centres :shrug:

I'm still not sure an LSD would be that troubled by 25mm rolling difference. When I worked on stations I've used different sized rims and wheel on land cruisers with LSD diffs for 400kms until a real replacement was bought in. no signs of ill effect. I know a Landcrusier isnt a mustang but if it's to get you out of trouble and to a tyre shop I dont think such an issue. Interested to hear how [MENTION=19128]Gnome[/MENTION] goes with that rim / tyre. It's be handy!

OK that is news to me I thought we did get the Torsen.
Can you tell me where this info comes from please?

In any case if we get close to the same diameter as the standard wheel it should be OK for emergency use. Once I find something I may put it to the service manager at my dealership to confirm their position on it as they will be the ones carrying the warranty.

the torsen is only on the 3.73 gears I believe, we only get the 3.55

I have just done some rooting around on the Internet and I believe you are correct. For some time we thought we were getting the full US Performance Pack, but we're only getting part of it for the GT.

I think the torsen/helical diff would now be a kind of a must-have in cold climates with ice. Not that I've ever driven on ice ... or any drugs for that matter.

Just fired off an email to Simmons, they have a 19" x 6.5" wide rim that can be made with custom offset, maybe they can do something.


I will be sitting down for the price though......

Just get 5 - 4 built to staggered offset, and one for the spare...
Would make it a little more palatable ;)

I think the style would work well with the Mustang, but you're right, a 3piece isn't going to be the cheapest option by any means.

Not doing sequential turn signals, not legal here and would get me pulled over quick smart, but I am getting the tri bar LEDs done. Just waiting on Diode Dynamics in the US to produce a board with brighter LEDs for daytime use as a DRL. Should be available in a week or two, hopefully. I have a guy lined up to fit them once here, could maybe do it myself, but he has done this sort of thing before so leaving it to the expert.

OK here is where I am up to on my search.

Simmons do a 19 x 7.0 ET + 20 that they think will fit over the Brembos, I am organising a test fit with them. There is a 175/60 R19 tyre available from JAX tyres that should fit this rim.

Diameter of the tyre is 693mm compared to 703mm on the standard rear tyre, this equates to 740 revs per mile compared to 730 revs per mile on the standard one.
I have asked my dealer to fire off an email internally to Ford to get confirmation from them on what speed and distance limitations they would place on using wheels with this sort of diameter difference.

If all my measurements are correct this should just fit in the wheel well and the cover sit flush in the boot if the foam is removed from the back of the cover.


Now the painful part, the wheel will be $400.00 and the tyre $280.00 so not a cheap solution, but failing any other options becoming available I will be going down this path if it works, and I have one more who will also be doing it.

My question to the audience is, would anyone else be prepared to spend this amount for this? Maybe they can bring the price down a little if I was to order more than 2.

If anyone has any other suggestions let me know, but please don't pollute the thread with, "Ford should have a solution available for this from the factory type replies" we all know that, I am interested in numbers so I have something to work with when I go see Simmons.

I see that simmons has got a dealer in WA - "Cronic Customs" - so if they could somehow get the wheels over to WA cheap (so that I don't have to pay ridiculous postage) then I think it's not too bad a deal!

What's the wheel design?

Also, I'm a little confused with the bold bit above, can you clarify?

There is a bit of foam under the cover that goes over the wheel well, it is around 10mm thick.

Good job John.

I'm guessing the rolling diameter of your proposed spare fits somewhere between the diameter of the front and rear tyres?

Nice spare - I can remember lusting after Simmons back in the 80's - in fact that FR in gold would look alright on my Race Red if I was after the retro look!

Does it even need to be a 7" rim; would the 6.5" do with such a narrow tyre?

You've checked re width fitting into wheel well; I assume the diameter fits the well as well?

I for one, am quite interested in this solution.
