I have a 2017 Mustang GT Performance Pack with the 6-speed MT82 and about 40,000 miles.

Overall the transmission shifts well, and once you get used to it the car drives really good. But the MT82 does feel a little clunky at times, especially at lower speeds and getting on and off the throttle. There seems to be some driveline lash that you can feel and sometimes hear.

I’ve heard that some amount of driveline lash/clunk is pretty normal on these Mustangs, especially with the manual transmission. Is that what you guys have experienced too?

Also, has anyone noticed an improvement after changing the transmission fluid? Mine is at about 40K now, so I’m wondering if fresh fluid would smooth things out at all.

Just trying to figure out what’s normal for the MT82 and what, if anything, is worth addressing.

What gears are you experiencing the clunkiness And t what speed? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it may be self induced by upshifting before you actually need to, which causes the engine to lug.

Just for reference, I never come out of 4th gear in the city and never use 6th gear on the interstate, unless I’m on a long commute and looking for the absolute best economy.

I changed the fluid to BG Syncro Shift and it improved the shifting.

It’s really just 1st and 2nd gear at lower speeds. It’s more of a little clunk/driveline lash when getting on and off the throttle. Once I’m moving, it shifts and drives really well.

Oh ok, that makes sense then and that’s normal for very slow speeds. If you were to put the car up on jack stands, put it in neutral and roll the rear wheel forward and back with your hand quickly, you will hear the normal backlash clunk.

Just out of curiosity, did you just purchase the car or have you had it for some time and just noticed the clunkiness at 40,000 miles?

Doug, I noticed you posted when you bought the car and it has 40 grand on the clock. Being as it's a 6 speed and there have been a lot of gear changes during these miles. If it were mine, I would put her up in the air and check all drive line U-Joints, control arm, and rear subframe bushings. If they check out (Not being torn or cracked) or the U-Joints not clunking I would change the gear oil in the trans and the rear.

But that is just me. Good luck with your new ride.

You stay in 4th on the interstate? My base GT is screaming at 65.
I went back and reread my post and saw that I somehow butchered it. What I ment to say was I never come out of 4th in the city and never use 6th on the interstate unless I‘m looking for best economy. I usually stay in 5th.

I bought my Bullitt at 25K miles. Changed out the trans fluid with the BG fluid kit and the diff with fresh oil and friction modifier. It help smooth out the trans/shifting some, but the MT82 is not the smoothest trans to begin with, so it will feel clunky, especially 1 to 2 relative to a Tremec or other trans. Mine has the same feel even after the fluid change albeit a tad smoother. MT82's leave a lot to be desired, especially after driving a smooth trans like the T56/Magnum XL.

4.09 gears will go a long way

There's a pile of lash in the driveline of these cars with the manuals, mine's been that way since Day 1. I think a lot of it lies in the 2-piece driveshaft.

Fluid swap helps with the shifting, definitely.
