Brake Pads - Kind of Urgent

Hi all,

I need a little help here.

Two weeks back I could feel my handbrake was geting quite high. Took it to Ford. As suspected my rear pads were getting low. They called me back and could not source the parts from the part number due to the car being USA import.

So I called Modurstand and Motorsport developments. Both had the parts with no issues but no open dates until July.

I have a driving holiday coming up on the 5th of July so need to get them done ASAP. I dont have a flat area as I live on a hill and it looks easy enough. But Also dont have the tools.

Ford came back to me and said they had finally sourced the pads. And it was £600 for parts and installation which seems a bit high to me.

So I was thinking to order the parts then get a local mechanic to put them in for me. But I am not 100% confident of the parts I need to order with it being an import. Can you guys help me with this at all?

So I reached out to the US part of this forum. I can see there are not many Mustang imports here in the UK for the S550 as it was available here so its been a bit tricky to say the least to get the info I needed.

There are basically two types of pads for the Mustang in the US and that is mixed with the packs available here in the UK with different part numbers from ford.

In the US you get the Solid discs with the FoCo Front Calipers and small Rear FoMo Rears
or
You get the base GT pack with its Split Rotors not solid. With the Base calipers again. All FoMO ( this is called the performance pack on the Ecoboost )
or
The Brembo GT upgrade which was part of the European Ecoboost base package it seems.

As I could not remove my calipers to check my actual pad shape. I reached out and a member in the US helped me with most of the above information.

I have now ordered some Rear pads from a UK supplier. I will still need to get someone to fit them but as long as they have tools I am hoping that is not a hard thing for any garage.

Ford who were not much help at the start but then sourced some OEM parts that came in at over £400 for some rear pads. I just paid £80 for upgrade non OEM pads.

This is the start of my clean up on my car. I have an appointment with Modurstang for new rotors all around and new front pads as well whilst its there. And also my calipers are getting refurbished. But this has not been fun at all.

Maybe I should have sold it when still in Canada ... lol

You figured it already, but yes replacement pads are cheap and there are multiple suppliers.

All you need is a caliper tool to push back the cylinder and a 14mm socket to get the caliper off. The pads just slot right in.

As a US import car I suspect you have no underbody protection either - better get that sorted ASAP or you will just have a pile of dust on your drive.

I think you certainly should have sold it and bought a UK spec car, life would have been much easier

Under body protection I have. My car was in Montreal with 6 months of snow. It's covered underneath. I used to also drive it in snow

But yes. In hindsight I should have. But it was my baby. It's done now. I worked out the correct pads eventually with help from the USA forum. They was super helpful.

Tomorrow I get new discs and front pads at modurstang who were also a great help. They was just fully booked and my mot was coming up.

I have just driven to Europe and did a lap of the nurburgring. Things are in a good place now. New wheels have arrived.

She will be looking fly haha

I wanted the project ones for sure. They looked amazing on your car. And I had agonized for so long what to get. But purchase time, and shipping time so had an effect. I didn't want to wait a possible three months.

I picked a set though and I love them. I much prefer how the car reacts on 20's and to have a whole new set of summer tires to grip well.

Fwiw I have tried EBC red stuff pads in the past and had a really annoying click from the front brake when moving the pedal. I put up with it for 45k miles.

I've just had DBA discs and powerstop z17 fitted in all four corners along with caliper respray by the guys at GT101. The z17 have a rubberised backing and low dust supposedly which was why I picked them. Braking seems just as good as the red stuff which was better than OEM imho.
