BMW is claiming 0-62 in 4.3 with DCT, which means it will be in the 3.9 range 0-60 as BMW claims are always way conservative. They rated the E92 M3 0-60 in 4.6 and these cars do it in low 4s.

I like it...definitely a possible replacement, if I replace my E92 M3.

BMW M2 vs. Mustang. Now that's a better comparision

Vehicle Length 176.2 Inches
Vehicle Width 73 Inches
$ 51000 (Est.)

vs. 188 / 75.4, $34 (GT / w Premium)

$51 is up there. But the big question is whether you can even get one at MSRP, and if so, what's available on dealer lots. Could easily be talking $55-65k car. My local BMW dealer likes to layer on all sorts of goodies onto the M235 to balloon its MSRP to 48-60k.

At that price point, there is lots of competition

I would prefer base V8 + blower - warranty > M2, and take my chances with a "bloated" car in rush hour.

That said, M2 is a very nice combo of status / performance, in a small car

I wish people would compare like-class cars, not the performance model European that's $15-20k more than a GT- $50+

OBVIOUSLY there is a lot more room with a GT to be faster for the price, so comparing stock to stock means little.

Plus maintenance being 10 times more on them

Are you OK? He's just discussing the new M2, in the "Ford Mustang Versus" section.

The comparison isn't fair from a dollar standpoint, for sure. Mustang guys don't realize how many compliments they are getting. German car enthusiasts have taken note of the S550 for it's beautiful design and NA motor. The germans are getting rid of V8s and pair that with the new S550 design and the Mustang might feel more like home than some realize. As much as Mustang guys on the board like to argue different, I don't own my BMW for status, I drive it for kick-ass driving and looks I like. Mustang does all that with a big trunk and is a more reliable DD by 10x.

Here is the thing about the comparison -- the BMW has much better build quality, dealer help, and being a pricier car you'll recoup more total of the purchase (not talking residual). So if I drive the BMW 235 or M2 for 2-3 years, it will cost more but not some absurd amount. 235I say you spend $8000 more than a GT Premium PP, well you'll get 5K back on sale, and then its a $100/month decision whether it is worth it to you. Keep in mind that although the BMW dealer is unreliable, they will flatbed your car and provide a loaner vehicle, super nice. When I've had to deal with Ford for our old Fusion, definitely wasted a bunch of time. Nothing I just said means I think you should choose the BMW, just trying to explain how people are cross shopping so much.

Final cross shopping point: I think lot of potential Mustang owners would like to leave some on the table for mods. If I'm buying an S550 GT (which I will certainly own some day) it will be with a few extra K for mods. I probably would just get a tune on the BMW.

...The germans are getting rid of V8s
^ this

it's non-trivial competing in the V4 / V6 space. You only get so many liters, and have to provide as much value-add as possible.

I suppose in some environments, less is more. Smaller car is better. Guys over on the UK section said the Mustang is a BIG car. In Texas ( / suburbs), its a small car. When parking is tight, and roads are narrow, it will be hard to beat the M2, at least for the upper middle class. Those of more humble means will have to choose something more "reasonable" :

The price 51k add one of the few options on this car out under 60K.
Should be a fun car and semi practical for DD duties. There is the "list" but would you sign the dotted line without seeing the car? I would have to see the M2 and consider the competition a used non-practical Porsche.

Sorry I probably posted this in the wrong subsection. Didn't mean to be a Mustang compared to the M2. Mods move if you must..

I was cross shopping the M235i before I settled on the Mustang. It was a badass fun car to drive, but in the end the cost wasn't worth it. If I wanted rear view camera I had to drop $2200 on a bullshit technology package. They make it impossible for you to buy what you want by lumping everything into an expensive package upgrade.

I too was cross-shopping a red M235i, when I started adding LSD, sun-roof, the red paint was extra and some other options the price quickly shot up. But to be totally honest I was ready to get behind the wheel of an American V-8 again. The M235i is nice and I'm sure the M2 is going to be a blast. I'm starting to sound like a broken record but there are only 2 Bimmers I would want to own, the E-92 M3 and the desirable 1M.
