So who's been out and indulged in some spirited driving (on a private road of course)... in particular what other cars have you gone up against?

This morning on the way to the office via my private road a nice looking mk2 focus RS came up behind me. Had a good bit of fun but ultimately I simply could not get away from him. The GT would start to pull away but then we'd be on a corner and the Focus could easily out corner me in the wet (or maybe just lack of confidence in a new car)

Great fun but I'd have liked to have gotten a bit further away from him as the Focus was on my bumper for the most part tbh

Should smoke a Mk2 Focus RS, you've got about 100bhp on him (And about a half a tonne of weight :shrug. If you see him again be a red line king :hail:

True, by the sounds of it i'd assume a tune at least, especially as he was willing to give you a little running and chasing around on your private road ;).


On that note, few tunes being worked on to my knowledge for both the RHD 5L and EB, with 'tuners' prefering to tweak the EB at the moment.

In the wet you will struggle against against any decent FWD or 4WD car, that is just the limitation of RWD.

I've got a 1300kg, 400BHP E46 M3 which absolutely destroys 500BHP Focus RS's on a dry race circuit which is what I built it for. But on a public road things become more even, in the dry its still got an edge but in the wet it takes huge skill and huge balls to push it, being so light in weight and so powerful it loves to do massive skidz. ;)

If you wanted a road warrior you should of got the new RS or an EVO X, not much will beat them on the road especially in wet and poorer weather conditions. So just except your car although good is no insane b-road handling car, what you have is an icon that will make others go wooooh, oh my, a Mustang.

Get the FRPP suspension, some Steeda/BMR parts on there along with some decent tyres like Michelin MPSS and then you might be leaving that RS.

Remember guys the Pzero's the Mustangs come on are a Summer tyre with only average wet performance and on a car like the Mustang they are actually quite poor in the wet. Trust me just changing tyres to MPSS will transform these cars ability, especially in the wet.

I reckon that in the wet at the moment, my Mrs in her Renault Captur could stay with me. I am scared of the far right peddle when the roads are anything around or above, slightly damp.

But in the dry.........I would take anyone and anything on!

I drive a lot of Capri's (I restore old fords as a hobby) so well aware of the "limitations" of RWD in the wet

I think he was on my arse so badly because of multiple factors, the main one being me not as used to how the car handles compared to my other cars and secondly the pzero's don't seem to be all that good in the cold & wet.

It was still good fun even with him trying to climb into the back seat lol

Trust me Pzero is pretty poor in wet. On the 911 I had Pzero nero and Pzero, the Michelin PS2 and MPSS. The PS2 were a vast improvement and the MPSS were like voodoo magic, the grip and progressiveness of the MPSS was mind boggling good.

What we all need to remember is that this is a GT car, that's 'Grand Tourer'. It's NOT a hot hatch killer or a sports car. It's for touring grandly and at a sufficient rate of knots, in comfort, to keep a smile on your face.

Sure, with the right level of skill you could 'compete', but sadly, there's not a lot of us around with that skill level, me definitely included in that statement. I have got a considerable amount of track time in a few marque's, but would not try to take on a hot hatch of the type described here, on a public road (I'm not pontificating morally, just not my style, if it's yours fill your boots ).

Think more of a high speed cruiser, than an out and out speed machine. The weight for a start is a killer.

Just sit back and enjoy the envy that is bestowed upon Mustang owners, people with discernible good taste and judgement

We have a slight incline on the road where I pull away from work and if I do anything other that just gently squeeze the throttle the wheels spin and she snakes around all over the place. If I get to excited on the gas peddle on wet roads in anything other than a straight line the tail wants to overtake the front end.

Are we really saying that I would notice a big difference with MPSS tyres??

Some difference if the tyres were hot, from cold, any tyre will turn you into a hedge muncher ;)

Just to add, brakes, a good suspension set up along with a good set of tyres are worth just as much on performance for the average driver as a Whipple supercharger.

I've done a lot of tyre testing, pretty much every premium Summer tyre.

Best wet grip tyres are Goodyear F1AS3/F1AS2 and Yokohama Advan V105, they are also good in the dry. The Goodyear is more suited for vehicles sub 1500kg however due to softer sidewalls.

For me the tyre which blew me away most for dry grip, wet grip, feedback, longevity and ability on track was Michelin MPSS, it last nearly twice as long as some other tyres, can handle track days and has exceptional feedback.

Yes it is a little weaker in the wet/cold compared to the F1AS2 or V105 but it was still leagues ahead of the Pzero in such conditions.

Anyone should be able to feel the improvement MPSS gives over Pzero in all conditions easily. You'd have to be a pretty poor driver not to tell or just the kind of driver to drives like my grandma everywhere.

Just go MPSS, they last longer than most tyres, work well in all conditions and are good on heavier cars.

You pay more initially but the longer life means in the long run you pay no extra and get to enjoy the extra performance and grip on offer in all conditions over the Pzero.

From the tyre testing I have done I would say out of 10:

Pzero / MPSS
Dry: 7 / 8
Wet: 4 / 9
Feedback: 6 / 8
Lifespan: 5 / 8
Noise: 8 / 7
Comfort: 7 / 8
Cost: 5 / 5


A better wet tyre is the F1AS2 or V105, but they are worse in dry and the F1AS2 has poorer feedback and don't last as long.

Better dry tyres than MPSS you have to move towards a semi slick like R888, cup 2's, Pirelli Corsa or Trofeo, I have also tried all these as well, the cup and cup 2 is excellent, the Corsa/Trofeo best for lap times on dry track. But they are all poor to average in the wet.

For me my money goes on MPSS everytime if I can get it in the size for my car, otherwise I look at Advan V105 and F1AS2 for road use. If for track usage I go for cup 2's now everytime.
